Dead duck

Post by butch sanders »

i saw a female mallard get hit by a car today. they had been living in my yard and the three surrounding it.
it was on a main street in Arlington.
The male would not leave her. some other man took her away from the road. the greenhead let us walk right up to him. he just kept kissing her.
i will never shoot another duck.
unless i can get both of them.
just kidding about both of them. it was a beautiful scene.
urban srawl sucks.

Interesting observation - how can you use this information to make you a better hunter?

That animal behavior is untypical because males are sex/territory driven. Usually it’s only the female of the species that shows such true and unselfish courage. But there is one other instance I’ve heard of where males showed the same characteristic as the drake did.

Years ago I read a story about government trapper in Wyoming. There they thought the phesent populations were being reduced by predators like fox - only later realizing it was a habitat issue. Anyway, after making an observation (like butch did) he developed a trapping technic for removing whole families of foxes at one location. First he’d scout out a den, because fox have preferred denning locations that wasn’t too hard. Then, using a hot dog for bait, he’d trap a pup at the den entrance. After dispatching the pup he would then burry it right there at the entrance, head first, leaving only the tail sticking straight out of the ground. Traps were placed around the dead pup where eventually ever single member of the fox family (including the male) would quickly be caught while they tried to rescue their family member.

I am going to stat using a flopping female as a decoy! Was it only one male or will this draw multiple ducks?

Heck, she probably had his keys or wallet or something. You know how women are.

Seriously, though, I had a little moment like that: had a dove follow another one (that I shot) down and just sit there and pecked at it for a while. Just flew off after a while, though. I apparently got over it.
