I have not fished Keith Lake in the yak before, but would definitely like to get something together and get out there to try it out. I know that some of the better places to fish are a really long paddle from JR's. I haven't fished Keith's in a long time, so I wouldn't have any good input, but would love to get out there - I would just like for someone with some experience on the lake in a yak to join in.

Send me a message if you get something going and I would love to join in.

Both of these areas are great for catching Reds, Flounder, and sometimes Specks.
I don't fish Keith Lake as much as I fish the upper end...Fence Lake, etc. because of the wind that covers the big lake most of the time. I concentrate on shell pads and dropoffs (into the canals). There is good tidal flow which means that feeding is pretty predictable. Don't leave your strawberry/white tail Norton Bull Minnows at home. This is the most consistent soft bait I've found for that marsh.

Bessie Heights is my favorite. I usually put in at the Pt Neches Park boat ramp and paddle downstream to the old barge parking area. There are 2 good ditches that lead off from there toward the Power Plant that will yield good trout. Then, anywhere you can leave the canals to get out on the flats, you will be in Redfish Heaven! The farther you get back toward the power plant the better the fishing gets. I think it's because the water is more stable back there. Baby 1-, spinner baits, bull minnows, topwaters, and spoons all produce well. If you have a favorite bait, you'll probably catch something on it! Good luck....and get a good map...print off the one we have on the maps page. 8)

Google Earth or Nasa whirlwind are also good tools to use for finding areas to fish around the Sabine area. I fish Kieth on occassion, but in a yak it can be unpredictable, because of the wind. The waves can kick up pretty quick there if the wind comes from the east or west. I have yet to fish Bessie Heights, because of the paddle. There are too many other hot spots that don't involve such a long paddle. Yet, I think that is just an excuse, since there are other places I fish that are 5 mile pddles one way. Since I am now in a Manta, I am even more inclined to make long paddles. The last trip we did over 13 miles round trip.

Newbie here. Thanks for the advise on where to go. I haven't a clue. Only have been out one time so far and now I am hooked.

I found Port Neches Park (I think) but I am unclear on where to go from there. Can you help a clueless newbie out?

Wouldn't that be paddling upstream from the ramp and not downstream? (To get to the canal access)
