Post by Fish Aholic »

I was wondering if anyone uses a do-net to keep their fish in?? I am considering buying a kayak. If I do catch some fish while in the kayak, how would I keep them????? Sugestions please.

I keep mine on a stringer if sharks aren't a problem, and in a cooler if they are. just remember that you will need to put them somewhere on the yak when paddling. a stringer or do-net creates ALOT of drag when left in the water. also take temps into consideration before deciding on which one. you dont want your fresh catch baking in the summer sun for an hour while you paddle back to the launch. If I had the $$ to spring for a fish bag, I might go that way also.

I have heard that the "cold" bags you get at HEB work well enough.

I use a fishng donet. It's from my days as a wade fisherman. I just put it on top of my plastic container in my tankwell. If I run across a sandy bottom, I can anchor my yak in one spot and wade fish. But, I haven't found any places recently since I like to fish the marshes for flounder and the bottoms there are quite muddy.

Connie (CM) on here sells them.

Zipper on both ends just slide the fish in and open both ends to clean works great.

Ice or frozen gel packs (which can be refrozen time and time again).

Sams bag

Post by JimD »

You can try a Sams bag too. they are cheap and sooner or later a fish will fin a hole in it but the price is right for 8 dollars. Just use frozen water bottles to keep down the leaks and have additional water to drink.

Do net are a pain. I uses one in the bay during shark season but they will blow out of the kayak or give wind drag and can not be dragged behind the yak ver well. They may fit in a tw but I have a t160 and they are a pain for me.

I want to second the CFS fish bag. I purchased on last summer and have used it in the hottest periods with absolutely no issues! My frozen water still had ice in it at the end of the day!

Donet is great. Works as a drift sock if you have some fish in it! Not a good choice on shallow flats with oysters tho!

I have been using two methods. One is a Stringer that I tie to an eyelet on my yak and the other is a Freezer Bag from Walmart or Sams. Only cost about $8.00. Not all Walmart have them but last found some on Hwy 45 S near Baybrook Mall. A photo of the bag is below. Also if you are cheap like me you can pick up some ice gel bags for free at your local vet clinic. They throw these away and receive a lot of them as some of their products have be be kept cold. If you don't find at the first vet try another.
