Anchor weight?

Post by DerekM »

It seems that most of the sporting goods stores carry 8 and 10 lb bell anchors. I think a bell is the way I want to go for lake fishing since the bottom of most areas I like to fish is rock. Is 8 lbs too much for a 14' Tarpon? Could I get away with less and can you find smaller bells?

WalMart carries a range of rubber/plastic coated dumbells from a pound or so, all the way up to 10 or so pounds. That is where i got a 3 pounder and it holds my 12' Manta Ray nicely.

I got razzed about using a 5-hole brick. I still get it now that I've upgraded to two 5-hole bricks. Sooner or later I'll break down and buy a 2.2 Bruce or some similar type anchor.

I use a 3# grip or folding anchor, I find this to hold me when I need it but when I am around rocks or underwater obstructions I like to go with a smaller folding anchor that way if it get hung up it is easier to jiggle it free.
