Usually are using 10-12' rods and heavy reels that will handle 20-30 lb line. You would need at least 200 yds of line, I would think, unless you just want to fish the 1st gut......although at times the first gut is a real producer.
Must be prepared to catch a 25-50lb fish in the winter and larger in the summer when the sharks are around.

The size reel you need depends on how far you plan to run your baits, and what species you're fishing for.
I run redfish baits between 150 and 350 yards. For the shorter distances, I'll just use my regular surf casting reels, for the longer baits, I use a Penn Jigmaster and a Daiwa SHV 40. Both reels have 150 yards of braid under a mono topshot.
For sharks, I use the Jigmaster and a 4/0 Special Senator. I might run the 4/0 out 400 yards.
Many folks use reels up to 12/0 for sharks, and run baits out several hundred yards.
You might want to use this rule of thumb: for reds, add 50 yards to the distance you want to run the baits. For sharks, add at least 100 yards.
That will give you a ballpark idea what size reels you need. The Jigmaster is a good all around reel, especially if you use braid and mono.
