LED cockpit lights

Post by StanT01 »

Sorry for the new topic, but for some reason php wouldn't let me post to the Phoenix 140 rigging topic.

That 140 with the cockpit lights is gorgeous, but folks who want to follow the lead with LED cockpit lights might want to consider some other color. The "white" LED's have a huge peak in the blue end of the spectrum, and as such they destroy your night vision for quite some time after they are used. Some other color in the red/orange part of the spectrum would not let you see true color, but would let you tie knots, handle fish, etc., without nearly as much damage to your night vision.

Current drain should be tiny; my 5-LED red bicycle tail light runs 40 hours on a pair of AAA batteries, and I've got some that actually use a watch battery(!)

I've got considerable experience with "white" LED's as bicycle headlights, and they produce a tremendous amount of annoying "dazzle".

There's a reason why airplane cockpit lights are orange or red...
