Team K Dynamite Fishing Tournament

Post by Mack »

Everybody else on the planet seems to be organizing a kayak fishing tournament so the members of Team Karankawa have come up with their own fishing tournament idea -- DYNAMITE FISHING FROM A KAYAK. We are going to call it the Team Karankawa Dynamite Fishing From A Kayak Tournament Series or TKDFFAKTS for short (the abbreviation just kind of rolls off the tongue doesn't it).

We will have six different divisions: 1) Professional Highly Trained Munitions Experts, 2) Anarchists, 3) Guys That Just Like to Blow Stuff Up, 4) I Saw This Once On TV, 5) PETA and 6) Youth. Entry fees will vary as to whatever we think we can get from you. Payout will be however little we think we can get away with.

You have to sign a release form (its 72 pages long, please read the fine print). The tournament will of course have a shotgun start. We are currently scouting as to where to hold the event but are leaning towards a 1/16 acre pond in Katy.

I see you don't have a women's division...
I don't want to be lumped in with those PETA pansies.
I've seen it on TV a couple of times - electroshock too.
I typically don't like to blow things up and I'm not a guy so that leaves a women's division as your only alternative.

I don't like it. There are some folks who can throw a stick of dynamite a contry mile, while others of us can't get it very far. To make it fair I think there should be a rule requiring the tying of the dynamite to the kayak with a string of a certian length, say 3 feet. :?

And I want to be the judge, the on shore judge, the way on shore judge.

Huge

Post by Mack »

This will be a huge new market for tackle manufacturers and others in our sport. I can see the postings now: "floating versus sinking dynamite", "how do I get more distance on my cast", "is color important", etc.

I thought the object of kayak fishing was to be less intrusive on the environment, enjoy the sights and sounds of nature and to shoot the finger at boaters. I have a few questions:

Is dynamite less intrusive than conventional tackle?

Do I have to wear my PFD?

Do I need waders? If so, what type? Breathable or insulated?

Can I wear a wetsuit?

If I wear a wetsuit do I have to wear a PFD?

Should I wear reef boots? If so, what kind are the best?

Can I wear my wetsuit, PFD, waders and reefboots at the same time?

Do I need to wear a belt with my waders if I wear all of my other stuff?

Do I need an anchor?

What is the best material for pipe bombs?

If I can't stand in my yak and throw the dynamite or pipe bomb, what is the best way to deploy them?

Is this type of fishing better in the gulf or bay?

Do I need to chum?

Should I plug my scupper holes? If so, what is the best material to use?

Does the Phoenix 140 or Tarpon 140 handle the concussion better?

Should I take a yak with a rocker or without?

What size hatches should I have on my yak for holding my explosives, fuses, etc?

Who is the best dynamite guide out there?

Is there a dynamite fishing school? Which one is the best? Which one is the original. I don't want to be in any copycat dynamite fishing schools.

What is the best meal to eat before going dynamite fishing?

What is the best sunscreen?

:D

As far as the dynamite fishing schools go, always go with the instructors that are missing the fewest body parts. They tend to know more about what they are doing
And don't forget your polarized eye protection

Rules Question

Post by Mack »

I just got a PM with a rules question. The answer is:

Yes it is legal to use disemboweled body parts resulting from your first cast (hate those dynamite throw backlashes) as chum before your second cast.

I have a few questions...

Do they sell dynamite at FTU? What section?

Will dynamite lose it's coloration after being exposed to water? I don't want to spook the fish because the dye wears off. Should I buy a marker in order to color the dynamite or should I just buy C4 which is plastic and contains no dye? But isn't dynamite stronger and more sensitive? I hear you lose more fish with C4 but that dynamite is less forgiving on the cast and takes some time to really get "broken in"... comments?

Will this be a team event or every man for himself? Is wading legal or do we have to stay in our kayaks? I'd like to swim my dyanmite down a little deeper in order to target flounder.

To target flounder, use a longer fuse and the appropriate amount of weight to get to the desired depth. :D

Crank, those are good questions: I use dynamite more than C4 but its a matter of personal preference. They both can be rigged weedless. In fact after the first cast I find that the entire area is normally weedless.

With regards to teams it is a two man event. One team member takes the dynamite in his teeth and paddles out to your fishing spot (the "paddler"). The second team member sits in his kayak by the shore and operates the detonator (the "smart one"). Spuds is the paddler on my team.

OK I'll take the "hold my beer and watch this category" but what I really need to know is can I wade with the yak tethered so as to be able to high step outta there.

SF you think that's funny I think you'll have a bone or two in your fillet.

I thought this was a throw back tourney (dead or alive) those are the only ones I like to fish.
