A couple weeks ago my neighbor pitched an idea to head to the coast March 9th to fish. I didn't really want to go because of Spring Break and Oysterfest, but the solunar and extended forecast didn't look too bad.
The Wednesday before the trip it got, um, windier.
We decided to still go and my sister tagged along. My sister fished Friday and caught a couple reds when the nicer winds; Chase and I drove down Friday evening. We decided to fish East Flats as I knew it would provide protection from the wind. We didn't get a super early jump because we wanted to let wind "lay down" before we hit the water.
The conditions we were facing were not taken likely. We based our decision on years of experience and knew how to be safe while on the water. I'm saying this because while we were fishing an USCG Dolphin was performing a rescue over in Redfish Bay.
Back to the report. I had a hunch we, or least I, would be wade fishing to cut back on the number of drifts. My sister and I ended up wading most of the day, while Chase worked the channels.
My sister an I each strung up a 21" red. I missed the hookset on another fish, and broke a solid feeling red on another cast. Of course didn't remember to bring extra hooks for the Trout Support lure, so I switched over to 1/16th oz jighead and Down South Lure. I got a few bites, but struggled with grass on the jighead.
My sister found a large sea slug/snail.
Our paddle back in was a breeze, literally. We barely had to paddle back to the launch.
We ended the day with just the two reds.
Dinner was cajun shrimp tacos with mango pico and sweet potato fries. Dessert was hard liquor.
