Re: Old Florida #4 Cork Drag?

Post by coldpass »

Have you already tried adding neatsfoot oil? I've got a #4 myself and if the cork goes I'll try to get some thin sheet cork and cut a new disk and glue it on. You can get some very thin cork sheet online.

There is some discussion about it on this thread.

Oh. Yes. That's done.

Here's an image of a Old Florida drag next to an Abel Super 10 drag. The cork is almost identically sized. So I'd say the #4 cork drag would be plenty for even a bull red.

I measured the cork disc on my #4 and it's 0.0665 inches thick. For reference I also measured a cork drink coaster I had sitting around and it's 0.1325" thick. 0.2" seems on the hefty side. Maybe you could thin it down by using some sandpaper attached to a sheet of glass and sticking the cork to another sheet (as glass is very flat) and working it down to a smaller size?

If you want something thinner to start with, a local Hobby Lobby will have cork coasters for a couple bucks that are 1/8" thick (Mine measured a little thicker than that)

And if you want precision (though I think sanding a sheet will get you there) then you could try McMaster Carr. The 1/16" size would probably be perfect and may have been what the reel maker used to begin with. (Old Florida became Nautilus Reels - maybe someone there would know if you emailed?)

I'm looking forward to hearing about how the repair goes.

The laser cutting machines are pretty cool. Not having one, I'd feel pretty confident I could do a good enough job with an old school compass and an x-acto. But if I had access I'd definitely use the laser. :)

Also, congrats on finding the perfect cork for the job. Sounds like it's been wanting to be part of a reel all along. It keeps popping off of the stone coaster!
