Bruce Claw anchors

Post by mrkm1010 »

I've been having my Bruce Clay anchor to hold in sand on a tide change. What weight do y'all use to get a good hold in the sand.

I use the 2.2# for my kayaks and the 4.4# for my Hobie Tandem Island.

I still use the small (2.2k?). If you're having trouble holding, just add more rope, or a few feet of chain.

That's the same one I have with about 16" of chain on. It might hold out BTB, but I can't get it to hold off the channels at tide change.

Yep, it is because typically channels have hard bottoms. I will stop there about hard bottoms.

I use 1 KG Bruce anchors on my kayaks. I did 30,000 miles between Galveston and Venezuela on 38-foot boats, including three Gulf crossings. I had five different anchors, but the one that held most reliably was my 15 KG Bruce(33 lbs). Different bottoms dictate different anchor types, but of you only have one, my advice is Bruce. If I was going BTB in my kayak(I'm too old), I would have at least 150 feet of 5/16" 3-strand nylon twist, 3 feet of 5/16" chain, and a thru-bolted horn cleat.

The ocean makes no allowances for amateurs or weak parts. Good luck and catch'em up! TexasJim

I changed the chain to 3 foot. Hopefully that will make it hold better.
