Live bait available?

Post by Remus »

It has been a while since I last posted in this forum. I guess there is no computer access in the nursing home where all of the Cali Catyakers are now living, he, he, he!! I was wondering if the live bait has returned to the launch area? June is the time to get busy fishing at the lake at least for me.
Hopefully I will see you'll there.

Yakdat perhaps next weekend. I went this Friday and found some live shad and baby tilapia's for bait . The bottom is full of moss and difficult to use the cast net. I had no bites.
Let me know next time you are going to the lake.

Did you catch the cats on Tilapia or other type of bait? Yes the grass is terrible.
I was not able to find the dam on the depth finder.
I'm planning to go this Saturday 15 June. and Friday 21 June. Hopefully you and others can join me.

Looking forward. I already bought the chicken livers. Friday is the best day anyways. The forecast looks wet and windy for Saturday and Sunday. See you.

Holy Spit! Two still alive. lol. Jeez just happen to get on my laptop today and visit old forums. Actually not surprised you two are still active. Since retirement I have been at Rockport fishing from kayak. Love those shallow water reds. Im on two FB kayak groups and have seen Calaveras hot with reds. Been meaning to get there, but side jobs and other stuff have me tied. I didn't even renew my yearly pass since last year. Jeez I miss that cat hole. Tomorrow I have a job in San Marcos. Will have my kayak and will paddle Canyon Lake. Good luck and looking forward to the reports.

Good to hear from Mike. I thought that I was going to see you more often at Calaveras since your retirement from the city of SA. John and I are the only ones from the group still fishing the hole at Calaveras. The catfish population has declined in the last few years. Last week John caught a catfish and a Redfish. I caught 4 small reds. Not so good. It was very windy.
I'm planning to go back to the lake on Friday 5 July.
See you brother!

Wondering whats going on with the catfish out there?
Once in a great while I'll hear a good report and then just this last week, I heard they had a catfish tournament out there and it had a good turnout, but that a very small stringer won it, and a lot of folks didn't even catch a fish.
I'm thinking maybe it's because Big Marv shut down his production of his cheese bait is about all I can figure?
I guess you can't sell enough bait to stay in business if nobody is catching fish!

Hey Jimbo, good to hear from you.
I tried Big Marv Cheese bait in two occasions with no takers. I don't know what is happening to the catfish .

From what I've been hearing, the consensus from a number of the fishing guides is that they have been catching few younger cats the last few years, so the indication is that the spawn has been disrupted and the culprit is more than likely those plecos, who have pretty much taken over the lake.
In the meanwhile the reds seem to be doing well, since they are stocked, and they still have talapia and other baitfish to feed on.
I'm thinking that the shad population is more likely to be effected by those plecos sucking up all the plankton and messing up the food chain.
Hate to say it, but when the only fish you will be able to catch, is one that has to be stocked, only to be taken out, and then continually restocked, means that the lake is pretty much dead. :horse:

That said, I'd love nothing more than to see you guys go out and prove me and others wrong! That way we can blame the weather! :D

I read that TPWD has just finished stocking catfish for this year, and that Calaveras got 220,000 channel cat fingerlings, and Braunig got a total of 135,000 channel cat fingerlings.
That should really help if most survive being eaten!

Hey Jimbo
That is what I was told by another kayaker. Are they stocking reds?

They are supposed to stock reds next, but when and how many it didn't say!
I wish TPWD would put a bag limit on the catfish in those lakes down from the 25 per person per day.
I don't know if it was only the over fishing, but something sure caused the decline that they had to restock the lake, and those meat hauls didn't help.
