Daughter-in-Law's family has a cabin on the Frio, north of Leakey.
Took the fly rod this last weekend.
Despite winds that seemed to approach gale force at times, some fish came to hand.

vodka-clear and always cold water in the Frio, from the fingers all the way to 3 Rivers.
Great sight-fishing.
There's so little chert in the upper river, and it runs down so quickly, you can fish it 48 horus after a flood.

I have a friend with a family ranch in the sendero south of Hwy 90, and three of us caught 400 bass one day down there.
Each of us broke off 2 or 3 lifetime bass - 10-12 lbs.
It's 20 mi of dirt road to get there.

ImageFloating-in is out of the question, because the river is a dry sendero between cold pools for 6 miles

The Sabinal is another jewel, and the confluence of the Frio and Sabinal fishes almost as well as the sendero, sight-fishing 5-lb bass and cichlids the size of footballs.
(There's a great float on the lower Sabinal, between the two bridges 6- and 8-mi south of the town of Sabinal, though count on portaging a few spots. The upper Sabinal is also good kayaking between bridges, but watch for barbed wire across the river.)

It is indeed a beautiful place to fish, Gents.
I felt very fortunate, had the whole river to myself.
Nice pics & info Ron.
I had one bass zoom past me in less than knee deep water, easy 4-5 lbs.
Fish seemed naive, don't think they see much fishing pressure up there.

The rod is SA System 5 glass (made by Fisher) from the 70s, 7'7" 5-wt, and the reel is a Hardy Prince
It's in the handful of very best fly rods I own, especially for hill country fishing.

another forum member, Finn Maccumhail owns one, too - here
