Trip report from last weekend

Been kind of quiet around here lately, so posting some pics…..

This year has been tough to find a window of decent surf and weather aligning on an actual weekend. Last weekend it happened and was terrific. Water temp was around 82 and clarity was super clear. Low surf and water was pretty calm, although a bit rolly with multiple cross-swells. Saturday was hot and sweltering out on the water. Sunday was overcast and a nice change from the previous day.

I didn’t keep exact count, but the 2-day fish tally was roughly:

+20 kings
A handful of very large Spanish (I think)
1 mahi
Couple bonito
Couple sharks
A few snapper
A few triggers

Overall, a nice variety. Pelagics all caught on either trolled ribbonfish or crankbaits. Bottomfish caught on jigs or cutbait.

The mahi was caught on a crankbait thrown along a floating log. She was all by herself and didn’t seem to have any friends, unfortunately.

I caught some what I think were large Spanish, they were small king-sized, but had the brown spots. I’ve caught them before like this over the years, and assumed they were just really large smacks or some sort of odd patterned or cross-bred kings.

Endo: What a trip!! You're killing lots of us with slime envy (Blake keeps rescheduling the Bob Hall trip :-) )

RE: Spanish vs. Kings: ID is most accurate by A) Dorsal Fin: pick up dorsal fin - Spanish will be black at fore end B) Lateral Line Dip: both fish have the line, Kings will "dip" more aggressively a-midship

WOW on the Mahi!! My favorite Pelagic. Bucket List = Get Mahi Slapped in a yak

I was out a couple weeks ago and caught 2 mackerel that were 31"-33" and they had faded brown spots like you described. I too thought they were large spanish.

Congrats on the mahi.

I'm thinking that might be the first Mahi reported caught from a kayak launched from the Texas coast. Anybody know of other mahi catches from a Texas beach-launched kayak?

Congrats! Awesome catch!

Do you have a pic of the crankbait used to catch the Mahi?

Nah, there's been lots of mahii caught from yaks in TX. There're not common within typical kayak range, but they're out there. Just be sure to investigate all floating structure you see.

@earthshipman. I don't remember exactly, but about 4 miles out.

A couple Mahi Mahi were caught at the 2015 BWKC (prof. Salt was one of the people to catch one).
