Friday Reds and Drum
Friday Reds and Drum
I took my 10 yo to the marsh for her first time Friday, in our tandem. It was meant to be a casual day on the water so we didn't get out of the driveway until about 7 a.m., hoping to Iaunch before 9 a.m. I broke down, for my daughter's first trip sake, and bought a pound of dead shrimp. (the stink on the yak now, is reminding me why I don't do this) Along with my 16 yo son (that does fish semi-regularly) in the Trident13, we worked our way through a channel or two, a bit of shallow marsh lake, and some oyster-patched flats. It was predicted 8-10 knots wind from SW which I figure is about right, maybe it was a bit more. High tide was in early-mid morning and tides have been a bit above predicted lately, so water was indeed pretty high. We found schooling reds after about 2 1/2 hours on the water and the tide was just starting to go out. Long story short, my son pulled in three reds using a cork near oyster patches, and the daughter caught her first salt fish on her first kayak trip...about an 10-11 inch black drum. I played captain and guide getting the tandem kayak to points, cuts, staked out, and oriented so she could cast to spots without killing me since I was about 5 feet right behind her. That's my weak excuse for a personal skunk, while the son did great and daughter caught on her first trip ever. Two of four fish were released and two will be dinners.
Taking your kid or two out and getting them on fish is pretty priceless. Today the official fishing report is son-3, daughter-1, dad-0.

Well done! I have 3 boys and find it challenging to get them out on the kayaks with me -- takes a lot of effort, training, and patience -- but ultimately can be worth it.

Cool report! Glad the kids caught some and had fun! Thanks for sharing.

I don't think it qualifies as a skunk if you're playing guide to a young fisher...person. Good job getting the young lady into a fish. That grin says it all.

Very cool. Wish I had been into kayaks back when my daughter was young. Don't get much time these days that shes grown up. Now I got that Cats in the cradle song stuck in my head, lol

Judging from the background in the picture, the color of hte water, and the fact that Crusher's board profile says he is in Houston, I'd say the Freeport area.
Congrats, Crusher. You are a good Dad.
