Ways to carry your kayaks

Post by JimD »

Someone asked how I carry kayaks for a long trip so here is a px on how they fit on my 16 ft Baby Cat.
Very little gear is used fishing the big flats down south.
Tie rope, claw anchor, rod, few baits, water, small boat not kayak drift sock, brick(s) or other weight to drag behind the boat to slow any drift, fish bag if keeping.

I use nose and tail ties and several HF tie straps. Plus some bungies just to keep things from rattling. ;) Jim

Simple enough.
I'm tempted to haul my 9-foot Malibu Mini-x down and throw it on my 16 ft. G3 tinny. It is a side console, so I should have room on one side for the yak. Maybe late this week or in a week or two.

thanks for posting. richg99

Roof rack with Thule Set 'n Glide Saddles. If more than one, then a Yakima Rack 'n Roll trailer. Before that, a converted john boat trailer. Rack n Roll is the way to go. It's a lot easier on the hulls than a trailer with leaf springs.

Hi. Newbie here. This is how I carry mine with a roof rack on my runaway camper. This is last weekend at Colorado Bend.

That vertical configuration on top of the trailer looks dangerous to me.

What happens if, somehow, the wind catches the bow of the yak at 70 mph on the road?
It would appear that the wind would spin the yak to one side or another.

I'd be more comfortable if the yak were flat. Just an old fart worry wart.... Ha Ha regards, richg99

Mothershipping our Solo skiffs. We ran 12 miles with the boat then fished about 4 miles down sun and down wind all day. When the day was over we dropped back into the bay and ran back to the mother ship.

Working on a crossbar system with J cradles for easier transport. Hard to keep the kayaks or Solos from bouncing around.
