Weed Guard/ No Weed Guard, that is the question!!!!

Post by aggiefisher12 »

I have been tying some surface and subsurface bass flies lately and have been using 16lb hard mason mono for the weed guards. The plan is hook into bass not weeds, debris, or get hung up on the bottom. Can both of these goals be achieved using the proper weed guard or will i have to give up one for the other.

I frequently fish with bottom bouncing, and while I do haul up some stuff, tying lures that keel hook up solves most snag problems.
If you're in moving water, down and across fishing minimizes snags.

I think you should be fine. I've never missed any hook sets that weren't my fault. Just use a good hook. I love gamakatsu hooks. Those things are so sharp, everything sticks. Besides, bass don't typically sip flies like trout do.

Side story about Gamakatsu hooks. After I finished working for a week and my buddy met me in Anchorage, we landed at Cooper for 4 days.
I was there for rainbows, dollies and grayling in the creeks, but he had to combat fish one afternoon at the Russian River ferry for sockeye.
I'm ok with that, because rainbows and dollies usually stack up below the fish cleaning stand by the ferry landing.

If you've ever fished for sockeye, it's snagging, so there's really no reason to fish any kind of fly other than a bare hook.
What happens? I'm nymph fishing for rainbows and snag sockeye. So I change my rig to a bare red Gamakatsu hook for snagging sockeyes, and I catch rainbows - they liked the red hook.

ps - my buddy got it, he loved fishing the creeks - we had a blast

Because many of the lakes I fish around Dallas are choked with hydrilla I always use weedless flies with 20-30# test weed guards.

I even put weed guards on the poppers I use. Image

I tie 90% of my bass flies with 20 lb mono weed guards that tie in at the bend of the hook and attach at the eyes that essentially makes a loop when looking at the fly from the side.

They are not hard to tie in and when needed you can simply cut it off.

William B Tedrick made a nice frog pattern with a senko finesse weedless hook. It seems to do the trick. You could probably use this hook for other patterns.

Thanks for the kind words.. the photo of that popper above has given me an idea for a very simple weed guard for foam flys
