finding tailing reds at night. using night vision.
Its easy to find schools when the stars are out or the moon is lit even a little. But when it gets dark, IT GETS DARK.
Sometimes they don't make noise either until I paddle over them and get the bugeezus scared out of me.

Details on the NV scope??
Re: finding tailing reds at night. using night vision.
Its a bushnell equinox z. Its capable of taking decent pics, but conditions need to be right. You can use it for daytime too but the visual quality is low. I got it through an online catalog at work and used reward points that I get so it didn't cost hardly anything. I'm sure there are better quality monoculars but I wasn't going to spend $500 and up for them.

You sir, are a genius!
Re: finding tailing reds at night. using night vision.
What I've learned is that its harder than one would think. Any movement and its out of focus. After lowering the monocular, my eye is temporaly blind. Kinda like watching tv at night with the room light off and then turning off the tv. Gotta make a sleeve that will hold the monocular. The case that came with it is snug and takes a while to get it back in there so I can make a cast.
I'm gonna rig a laser to it so after I find the fish, I can point to it with the laser and look that direction with my other eye. That will give me a reference for lure placement.
Already found a cheap laser at walmart. ☺

Just when I think there are no other techniques to fishing, this comes up. Brilliant, outside the box thinking. Hope to see more fishing reports.

Ever thought about using this over by the Aransas Refuge? Bet you will see more than I want to know about.
Re: finding tailing reds at night. using night vision.
Thanks guys.
I'll be taking video also. Only used it 3 times on the water. The first time I didn't see any schools which was weird cause I always run into at least one small school.
The next time I was on the water for about an hour. Lightning was really crazy and kept scaring the reds and me so I left. It was the kind that just travels across the sky.
Early sunday morning was the longest run time to fool with it. Launched around 4:00, started scoping the water about 4:30 and messed with it til sun up. The first school I found was a decent one. I put the scope away and made a cast. Bounced the gulp once and BAM!! FISH ON! It was.....?....a big hard. Huh? Next school I find, make a cast, a fiesty little speck and a rat red. Um, something ain't right. Third school, wind picked up and I couldn't put the lure where it needed to be. They scattered. sun came up and I caught a 18 inch speck by the launch site.
Go figure...
Ok back to he scope.Batteries last about 2 hours switching on and off and no video taking. There is a serious shutter lag that I have to get used to. Seems like forever compared to my dslr cameras. Other than that, I think it will be useful tool come early winter when its calm.

These are pretty cool too. I'm not sure on the range though.EZ-E wrote:i've been pondering getting one of these ... thermal has gotten a little more cost effective.

There are 3 versions ... 2 are for 35 meters with a 50 degree beam angle & the other has a narrow beam of 25 degrees that will go 120 meters.Dux20 wrote:These are pretty cool too. Great. I'm not going to be able to take a whiz in the dark anymore.

Haha, yeah, sometimes it might be better to NOT see everything.Tombo wrote:Ever thought about using this over by the Aransas Refuge? Bet you will see more than I want to know about.
