No Name Fly

Post by bosquebum »

Since it's too cold to fish and the white bass are moving, I decided to spend a little time at the vise. After a little while researching what whites and stripers eat, I came up with a few flies I though would work but this one was the most fun to tie. It doesn't have a name yet so feel free to offer up any suggestions.

First I started out with a #6 mustad 3366 and added a little .020 lead wire.

Lock the lead wire in and add a few strands of krystal flash. Red and white always seem to work well for me in freshwater.

Tie in a piece of zonker strip about 1 - 1 1/2 inches long in the middle of the strip
Image

Lock the zonked in place so it doesn't spin and then add palmered chenille up to the edge of the lead wire.

Pull the zonker strip over the chenille and tie it off. Whip finish and cut.

Add 1/4" 3-D eyes

CCG the eyes into place to keep them secured. I like to use CCG Hydro.

Cure and repeat

I don't care what you call it I'm betting that thing would be quite effective in the surf or off the jetties. Trout, smacks, jacks, and even kings would likely tear that sucker up.

How much for dozen in size 2? ;)

I might try olive over white, grey over white, or chartreuse over white if I were going to use them in the surf. More of a baitfish coloration (?).

That looks like a killer fly. I'm interested in how that fly works in the field, I mean water. I wonder if a longer shank hook would also work particularly when the Whites are tail biting.

Another question - where did you get those eyes.

The name is obvious to me - The Bosque Bum.

I went out with one of these I tied on #2 gama SC-15 and made some casts, it looks great in the water. The rabbit strips really look alive. Swam true and very natural looking on a strip, Slow sink rate, and visible.

Ooooh that's nice. I bet this fly really comes alive in the water, that rabbit tail, the flash, those big eyes.

The bosque bum...I like it!

I got the eyes from the outhouse in waco. They are hareline 3-D eyes. Should be able to find them online

So with the lead wire on the shank does it ride hook point (red side) up?

I tried one of the ones I tied in the water and it rides hook point down. The original as posted had .020 lead wire on the shank. I used .015. Mine would float on the surface after landing until I made a strip then it would submerge nicely and slowly sink. The zonker piece is very realistic.

I can imagine using this in the surf or bay. It was easy to cast.
