Landing a big fish from a kayak

I put out some jug lines out lastnight and had probably 30-40 pound catfish on it. I was able to get to fish next to the kayak but was unable to get a net under the fish to net him. Eventually the hook was bent and the fish was able to get loose. Is there any advice on landing a big fish like this.

I'll bet that was one helluva jug to grab from the yak! I find it very exhilarating chasing jugs from my kayak.
