Rod leashes: How To Video
Several folks asked me to show how to make the rod leashes I use on the kayak, so here you go. I got the idea from this forum a year or two ago, but I could not locate it using the search feature. This information is geared towards the newer folks trying to rig out your kayaks for BTB and who enjoy making the gear yourself when possible.
I like these leashes more than what I have seen for sale at the stores... and I made them myself.

Re: Rod leashes: How To Video
I would make one and try it while sitting in your kayak. Be sure the length is what you want before you make more... You may end up shopping for a larger pan!
Re: Rod leashes: How To Video

Nice video
If you want to make the leash coil tighter in it's non-stretched state, reverse the coil direction after you boil it. I saw this technique on one of the "how it's made" show, with the company that makes telephone cord. I did try it on the leash I made and it work.

Your the man prof... was meaning to ask where you found yours... I just made two and working on my third now. Note to self you have to increase boil time a lot with .095 line, at least the stuff I bought. cost $15 for three that total 7ft each...

Awsome man, thanks Prof already made up 5 last night. The only thing that I did different was I used the wife's good pan. Didn't affect the quality of the leash at all.

I put one on to cook and forgot... Until I smelled it. Now I have to provide my own cookware.dr.flatfish wrote:Awsome man, thanks Prof already made up 5 last night. The only thing that I did different was I used the wife's good pan. Didn't affect the quality of the leash at all.

Take your camera with you and make videos that I can watch. I'm just showing you what I do, not keeping you on the couch!

Easy, big guy! I can't swing a GoPro either right now, so I make the most of my little Playsport. You can find a used one at a pawn shop for less than $30 if you look around. Get one and start making some movies of your own!
Now that's ballin' on a budget.

Re: Rod leashes: How To Video
I like the idea and would have never thought. Thanks for sharing. I'll be making a couple to keep my pliers and knife to my life jacket.
I had a thought that could make wrapping a little easier. If you where to make one end of the dowel a little longer. You could put it inside a 3/8 cordless drill and could feed the line on using your other hand while spinning the dowel low speed in the drill. Should cut wrap time to a minimum and no hand cramps.
Thanks again for sharing prof.

Re: Rod leashes: How To Video
Found one ill trick tonight that makes the coils even tighter. Pre heat your line in a bowl of water in the microwave... voilla no more gaps.

How long did you microwave it for?SAHunter1983 wrote:Found one ill trick tonight that makes the coils even tighter. Pre heat your line in a bowl of water in the microwave... voilla no more gaps.
