Upper Nueces Bay access
Upper Nueces Bay access
Is there an easier way to get to up in the back bay area of Nueces Bay than Carbon Plant Rd and a 2 mile paddle just to get somewhere?
Never been in there and just thought I'd ask.
Thanks.

Nope, and its harder than it looks to paddle.
If u do go, dont get out of the yak.

X 2 on hard work but when they are there it is really worth it. Learning curve is pretty harsh or can be. I would paddle with someone, bring water and a snack and have at it.

That place your gonna love it or hate it. Watch the tide because I've been there when the water was on the way out and it was no fun. Have a float plan and try to go with someone.
Re: Upper Nueces Bay access
Thanks for the replies.
So...
Watch the Tides closely and plan the paddle with the higher tides.----Is it a case of dragging the bottom the whole way or not getting out period till the tide rises again?
Don't get out of the kayak. ----I'm guessing the mud is deep and nasty here?
Bring extra food and water and friend... Check
Thanks again.

Re: Upper Nueces Bay access
memm is correct you will either love it or hate it. . if it's your first time back there I would go with someone who knows the area or study google earth . the guy that knows the mud and introduced me to it is nuecess bay. Maybe he will chime in and give some advice. As long as you watch the tides and wind you should be alright....

Re: Upper Nueces Bay access
Take a GPS or a good aerial map because it's easy to get turned around. Like others have stated it's a love/hate relationship. You better be comfortable with sitting in your yak, because there are few and far between places to get out and stretch your legs.
Re: Upper Nueces Bay access
And a stake out pole or broom handle to push with in mud, so u don't break ur paddle.
Also go when u have time and don't have to be somewhere. U smell funky when get done.
Besides fishing, it is really great for birding.

I wasn't lost...you guys just couldn't find me... I knew EXACTLY where I was (Catching big FAT redfish under birds)
when I go back in the marsh...I GO BACK IN THE MARSH...Did plenty of 10 mile paddle days when living in Houston, but it seems long paddles are rare this far south...

Re: Upper Nueces Bay access
My average trips when I lived in Corpus were around 8-9 miles. Every time I'm in the Nueces it's around 12 miles; I stalk redfish when I'm back there.
Re: Upper Nueces Bay access
Not getting out if tide drops too far...unless you like walking through stomach deep sticky muck. It is very easy to get turned around if you dont know your way around. There are places you can get out, but those soft spots can be right next to solid footing...my 1st time back there I was standing on hard firm ground...half step later was crotch deep in muck. If you portage across watch for rattlesnakes...if you take suicide channel make sure you have a flag on your yak...the boaters cannot see you and they have to stay on plane in that channel or else they will be stuck also. Like everyone else says...don't go alone and let someone know your plan. The fishing can be amazing or it can be the longest paddle of your life. If the wind is going to pick up...dont go..coming back upriver against a strong SE wind is a losing battle! Good luck..hope to see you out there sometime!FlatLuck wrote:Is it a case of dragging the bottom the whole way or not getting out period till the tide rises again?

Re: Upper Nueces Bay access
Thanks Travis. I'll holler at you Friday. Sounds like i may need to get others opinion in directions
I'm not too worried about the leg stretching my ultimate is pretty stable and I can stand to fish whenever needed.
So...
Watch for snakes
Fly a flag
Go during low wind conditions
Push pole
Seat cover for my mud butt when I get back to the truck
and probably the most important part is the float plan and gps.
I'm assuming there's cell coverage so the gps on my phone should be sufficient?
Thanks again guys.

Extra change of clothes, don't wear crocs bc you will lose them in the mud. 6" of water with 4' of mud.
And Travis was lost! Haha but he did win small rod challenge that day!

Re: Upper Nueces Bay access
I agree 100% with everyones advice on the nb back mud. Good advice. I will add, keep moving and looking for fish. Blind casting back there is a big waste of time, with the small exception of directly under the railroad trussel when the tide is pushing in or out. Everywhere else, keep paddling until you see a bronze humpback. Tails are pretty rare but on rare occassion they will tail. you can also look for shrimp jumping along the reeds. But keep moving. You often have to place your jig directly on their nose. Those reds dont get fat like that by chasing bait, they are fat and lazy!
