Sad to see this. Glad he survived and is ok.

High visibility colors are nice if you're going off shore.

Does the USCG send you a bill for these rescues? If you take a ride in an ambulance or of a medical helicopter you always get a bill, just wondering.

the coast guard helped me out one time and i was really worried about how much it would cost (i was really hesitant to call them).

after they helped me out I asked them how much thier services would cost me and they responded, "thats why you pay your taxes."

i never got billed. God bless the USA and the USCG!

Ive always been told that as long as the rescue/assistance is warranted (not calling just because your "worried"), there will be no bill.

As a former CG member, I can tell you that the boys who do the actual rescues, as well as the officers and petty officers who diret them, have no knowledge or interest in any payment for their services. The have a duty to perform, and they do so with all the sklll and traiing they posess.

I always carry a marine radio with me, that floats. It's much easier to just press a button and make a distress call then have to deal with a cellphone that doesn't even float. I also carry my cellphone, but just as a backup.

i marine radios is best, the coast guard monitors channel 16 and pick up a 1/4 watt signal over 35 miles away if needed.
