Easy polishing for tarnished Johnson Silver spoon

Post by Cuervo Jones »

It's raining and I'm laying low this weekend. So I'm going through my boxes, organizing lures and restocking plastics, etc. I came across a bunch of Johnson Silver Minnor spoons that are all blackened with tarnish after several seasons in the salt and less than great care by me. Not only am I cheap, but lazy too. What do I do about it? I looked around online and found a tip that actually works. If you rub some toothpaste on the spoons, let it sit for awhile, say an hour, then rub it off vigorously with a dry, clean cloth, lo and behold!!!! The silver is restored almost completely and I have a bunch of shiny, pretty-type spoons again. Give it a try if your lazy and sloppy like me and have a bunch of tarnished silver baits laying around. Plus your fingers smell minty-fresh afterwards! Alright, back to planning for next week's fishing trip. Adios!

Interesting. What about gold spoons?

Do not use Brasso on gold spoons, unless you want good looking silver spoons.

I would suggest Never-dull. Toothpaste is too abrasive and
will take off too much finish.

I used toothpaste because I had it.
And I have only used it on silver spoons.
It worked well, but I don't know about brass or gold.

Both gold and silver spoons respond very well to soaking overnight in white vinegar.
In the morning they will be sparkling. Just wipe off the gunk that is still hanging around.
Also, if you take the time to spray your new ones with clear Rustoleum, you won't have to rescue them so often. It also works on rescued spoons.

These are all helpful tips and now have me thinking about spraying clear Rustoleum on my teeth. Think of how many new spoons I could buy if I didn't have to go to the dentist!

I have spoons that have been in my wading box (which gets salty every time I fish) for 5 years. I wash all the lures I've used after every trip, let them dry and then for the spoons - all I do is wipe them with a cotton rag. If you don't let it build up, tarnish won't be a problem.

A couple years ago a wealthy fishing buddy of mine was cleaning out his tackle room ( yes, a room the size of my bedroom just for fishing stuff) and either giving stuff away or throwing it in the trash. Among the 50 or so lures I salvaged were some spoons that were badly tarnished, but the hooks were fine.

I used Brasso and they look brand new now.

I've got a few swiming images that were left in a forgotten tackle box and have rust stains on the body. Any ideas for cleaning these up or are they a goner?

I just tried the vinegar soaking suggestion on a spoon I found buried in the bottom of one of my boxes tonight. WOW! shiny and new it looks! I soaked it for a couple of hours and rubbed it off with some paper towel. Presto! And even easier than toothpaste. Though less minty. Still, I recommend it.

I always seem to have a few small wads of steel wool hanging around my "fishing bench". I use it for spoons, hooks, knives and anything else that builds up rust after salt water use. I do like the white vinegar idea. I'll keep a spray bottle of that around as well. Cheap stuff that works! Who doesn't appreciate that?
