Galvez Mack Attack 4-21-10
With an open window of low winds and much higher for the next 4 days, I decided to load the Yak and try out the beachfront for some action. With the reports of Macks on the Menu, I stayed focus on them because those macks would mince up those gourmet trout in a half a second and it is still early for the trout. ( Same goes for the Macks )
Loaded with leaders, old topwaters and silver lures, I was off into the surf. Water temp 72 degrees and semi stained and not much tide movement, but that does not matter when you are on a mack attack.
I paddled out a few hundred yards and I smelled the watermelon patch coming my way. First cast hooked up an 8 # 32 inch Mack. ( PB ) Netted and strung em up and casted out for the next one. It was on like this for the next 5 hours. When they were not on top I put a heavy silver lure on at picked up more.
The action and exhilaration surf fishing for Macks goes 10 times more than when I’m on a school of Reds or Trout . It reminds me of Blue fishing on the East Coast. It was great being out there in the middle of the feeding frenzy. Some of the macks were flying about 6 ft in the air.
Macks ranged from 18 to 32 inches. Didn’t keep a total count for the day. I just made sure to have 15 on the Stinky Pants Stringer when all is said and done. That stringer had over 50 # of Feech on it yesterday.
I also had a jack that unhooked himself from my leader swivel. LOL It was fun while it lasted.
Klever sure has his eye on the big mack..

Nice Catch! I'm planning chasing Spanish this summer as well. Any pointers on spotting Spanish out there? I know you said something about a watermelon patch. Is that comparable to a slick? Thanks.

That was a great detailed report. Catching smacks is thrilling for me when they're hitting all around you in a feeding frenzy. Those size smacks are what I'm looking for when I fish Surfside for them.

Great work. Mackerel are very cool fish. Their aggressive nature, fast runs, and pretty coloration make them a favorite of mine.

Agreed. I love catching them on the fly when they're aggressively crashing bait in the surf.Milkjug wrote:Great work. Mackerel are very cool fish. Their aggressive nature, fast runs, and pretty coloration make them a favorite of mine.
And contrary to what some think they're darn good eating too.

Broiled? Lets not forget "fried".

Now we have a SmackGuru!
Re: Galvez Mack Attack 4-21-10
Heavenly broiled is the way to cook mackerel. Anything topped with parmasean, butter, and mayo has to be good. Pretty cool that someone else uses that recipe too, I cooked some mack fillets that way yesterday afternoon and it was a hit as always. Save the frying for the flounder and trout.
