Does the "ulimited" really mean unlimited? Does the Hobie w/turbo fins count or do you actually have to paddle??

I'm not sure if it would be legal to race but the Hobie with Turbo fins would still probably get out run by a lot of the yaks that race in the unlimited class, some of those guys in the surf skis really cover some water. SouthWest PaddleSports will be there but we will be renting the majority of our fleet for the race so I won't be able to run it this year.

I think its against the rules but you could just show up and do the race anyway.

Maybe it will inspire the race officials to allow "human powered boats" into the race so some inovation in non-paddled human power can be showcased.
Paddleing technology has about peaked but we have a ways to go on developing other methods.

And southwestpaddlesports is right.
The surf ski's and K1's guys are very fast, 8-9mph on flat water.
With the current in the bayou they do the 15 miles in under 2 hours.
I think last years winner did it in 1hr 40 minutes in a K1.
The 13' to 16' fishing kayaks can do it in 2:00hrs to 3:00hrs if the paddler does their part.
I did 2:30hours in my Tarpon 16.

Looks like fun! Should be an interesting paddle and a great way to increase green space/waterway awareness.

38 years, wow... I lived there and never heard of it, but then again downtown festivals.... sometimes I miss the big city, but not often. :D

Jennifer - in the old days we called it the "Reeking Regatta"

when I was still paddling against the clock

Buffalo Bayou was a huge success! Over 400 boats and 600 paddlers in 7 classes. Happy to say I won 1st place in the Long Recreational Kayak class in my sea kayak. Almost 15 miles in 1:57:30 congrats to my friends Charlie and Adam who won 1st in the Tandem unlimited.
