Best uses for pool noodles?

Post by malo pescado »

Just curious. I know there's tons of things I haven't thought of that are probably old hat to you guys.

My tip is go to Home Depot and get the foam pipe insulation that's like a thinner version of a pool noodle, and pre-slit up the side. They make GREAT rod protectors for in the truck and in the garage. For spinning rods with large guides you open the slit up as far as you need to let the guide poke out, and then add a wrap of clear packing tape to stop it from going past there

can be used in sections for:

floats for bigger diameter rods
floats for VHF radios
floats for cameras
floats to go around a dip net to keep it on top of the water
floats for pretty much anything you dont want to sink in case you flip or drop it

also used to pad you kayak on a bed extender or kayak trailer

too many things they can be used for...you can get really creative with them

I cut small sections and tie them to anything that can go overboard. I also line my bed extender with pool noodle. I even keep one in the hull of my kayak..in case I could use some extra floatation.

I waded with a guide from redfish lodge once who rigged a BIG floating bait bucket (enough for at least 3 people) out of a shrimp basket and had a pool noodle zip-tied around the top for the rim to make it float. Hinged lid out of plexiglass.

Used a piece of one inside of a custom compass mount that fits inside my cupholder. Flotation or protection... the noodle is like duck tape. Always have one on hand, you'll find a million uses for it. I even used it on my homemade kayak cart to pad the ride.

for all the rigs i make for BTB fishin i get a roofing nail with the big head and put it through the swivel and wrap it around the noodle and then put the hook into the pool noodle. i can fit about 6 rigs around a 1 foot long piece of pool noodle. it works great and if you happen to drop it it floats. :) :)

I shoved several down in the center rectangular hatch to keep things from sliding too far forward or rearward to be able to reach them.

1 - bend into U-shape holding the two ends together
2 - insert into hatch, center portion first and facing forward or rearward, until it hits the scuppers
3 - release so it expands against the interior sidewalls
4 - repeat

This lets stuff slide around in the hull, but only so far, i.e. it can't go past the noddles, which are held in place by the scuppers. So, you don't have to worry about that tackle box sliding all the way aft, etc...

I made one like this last week for 6-8 kingfish leaders.

Old pool noodle that was slit down one side and slid the 2-3 treble hooks (PER LEADER) inside the split.
Then wrap the wire leader around the pool noodle and slide inside a container
I had from a Frog Togs Coolie Wrap fits perfect and keeps 6-8 leaders and 12-20 treble hooks close and safe.

Will take some pic's and post them soon.

I also used the pipe insulation version from HD.
I cut the peices to the proper length and pushed the slit side down on the top edge of my milk crate and ball bungeed it in place. When I load my yak, I pull out several different colored jigs, spoons, tops, ect and I press the hooks into the foam. Allows me not to dig into the box. I just turn, grab and a change of lures is much easier.

I have had the same set of tubes on there for over a year and i give it another year before I will need to replace them.

I have about a dozen cut up and packed into the X-Factor for flotation.

I also put those inflatable boat bumpers in specific locations to support the deck. Just deflate them, slide them into place and gently inflate them with a bicycle pump until they have a snug fit.
