Rod Id help

Post by cyberyakker »

While cleaning up hurricane damage I came upon a rod that belonged to my wife's grandfather... not a fancy rod, but holds great sentimental value for me. the line on it was bad so I need to know what kind to get...

8 foot fiberglass two piece rod says berkley winfield 140-8 by the handle... I am guessing a 4-weight but have no way of knowing. Any help is appreciated.

140 would be the older designation where it went by number of grains in the first 30 feet. This would be equivelant to a modern 5 weight line.

Here's an article that explains it further.

Not at all Al.

By the way, the more I read about what they had to go through with those old lines, the more I appreciate my modern equipment.

As a youngster my job at lunch time was to pull all the line off the reels and drape in the bushes to dry. Then I got lunch. good day was honey butter on left over Breakfast rolls.
After I ate. I had to dress the line with red mucilage stuff was a wax/slim/goose grease that left my hands red.
This was the floatant and line dressing put it on wipe it dry.
Fun it was not but I got to go with the men.

Yep They were Soaked and kept wet. To keep them soft. A little grease on them to make them hold the fly on top.
None of these fancy do da stuff like today. mud sunk it.
First time in a long time I thought of Honey Butter..

I doubt the rod was a 4 weight; fiberglass did not come in that light of rod back when fiberglass was king. You can probably find out the information you seek by going to
www.fiberglassflyrodders.com
Its an on line site devoted to old fiberglass rods-p-
