Any advice on spinning reel line twist

Post by 1alextorres »

A buddy of mine uses spinning reels and has a problem with line twisting. This causes a big mess at the end of his rod tip after he casts lures. He uses a H3 6'6" rod and a Sahara 2500 reel. The line that he has on his reels are spooled with Vanish flouralcarbon line. They are not over spooled for he had to cut about 20yds of the other day on one of his cast. We will be going this weekend down to the Kayak School with Dean and I would like to help him solve this problem before we go down there. I would hate for him to have to take the Zebco with him because he is terrible with a baitcaster. Any advice will be very helpful.

Thanks,
Alex Torres

There is a certain way that you have to spool line onto a spinning rod. the line must twist around the spool the same way the bail turns.
I don't know how to to explain it w/o showing yo. maybe someone else can do a better job at explaining.

I do have another tip though. Hop in a boat release the line into the water, leave the bail open and paddle/give it gas and let all teh line come off the reel. When its all off, apply moderate tention and reel it all back in. Hopefully all the twist will be gone, if not, get some new line and spool it again.

Let me try to explain another way.....

as the line comes off the spool from the box, it has memory. As you spool, don't fight the line to make it reverse its memory. Keep the coils going the same way onto the reel. To do this you must flip the spool of line over on the floor face up or face down

I hope that helps, but it probably just confused you.

Besides the misapplication of line to spool, let me be the first to say that, "Vanish was created be Satan himself." I have experimented with MANY fishing lines, and there is not a line in this world that has as bad memory as Vanish...this might have been an exaggeration, but I would hope that you understand how much I hate the stuff. I'm sorry to anyone I have offended that uses Vanish, to each his own. There are some premo lines out there, and Vanish isn't one of them.

P.S. Vanish does have some highlights to it. It serves well for setting the hook on redfish due to it's little stretch. It also has little if no visibility.

Yes, I should have added that too. On a reel of mine I put on Vanish, I hated it. Then I switched to IronSilk, (which was even worse  :x )
So then I went back to Stren Original, problem solved

I've always been told that reeling in a fish against the drag will also twist the line on a spinning reel.

Ditto, don't reel when a fish is pulling line off the drag.

It might have to do with the line like others added. I'm also not very fond of Vanish and so are a lot of people I talk to. I guy told me the other day "they call it Vanish because when you set the hook the fish vanish." Using a baitcaster sounds likes it will solve the problem.:D

I use 20lb Vanish as leader. It's worked good so far.

:D Ditto, get a baitcaster and give the spinning reel to your son, nephew, etc ! I used to use spinning reels and got so aggravated, I finally gave up and got me some Shimano Curado bait cast reels, problem solved, except for the occasional backlash when I spot a tailing redfish and get ALL flustered with adrenline!! Hate when that happens! Good luck!!! :D

He does use a swivel with about 12" shock leader to the lure. He read this thread the other day and would like to thank everyone for the advice to solve this problem. I wish he would sign up and be part of this site....hint, hint.

I use Trilene Big Game on my Sahara. Works OK. After a couple of trips I have to take some line off and it's good to go for a couple more. Should replace the line after a few tips anyway.
