Matagorda Rig Question
All the topics and posts I see about the matagorda rigs mention them being 5 miles down the beach and I can see those rigs on charts but is there not a rig 2 miles from the channel jetty?
Re: Matagorda Rig Question
I have fished Matagorda for along time but I have never fished the rigs mentioned in your post. Never really looked it up before but I’ll be following this post for sure, 1.57 nautical miles is nothing to paddle. I’m sure someone one here has experience with the Matagorda rigs , come on let’s post up the info.
Re: Matagorda Rig Question
I don't fish that area, but what I will call out is that a lot of rigs noted on nav charts, NOAA sites, etc... are no longer there. A lot have been removed, so that may be what is going on.

Re: Matagorda Rig Question
Late reply but no there's not a rig there. Maybe something underwater but nothing visible. The posts are correct about one being 5 miles down the beach and 2 miles offshore though. Be safe out there if you go, tons of sharks every time I go! Even had one ram my kayak when I was bringing in a mackerel once.
Re: Matagorda Rig Question
Okay, so where do I find the sharks? I’d love to catch a 3’ blacktip from the Hobie.titanic2 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 2:44 pm Late reply but no there's not a rig there. Re: Matagorda Rig Question
Fished there more than a few times a few miles down the beach and 2 miles or so offshore like someone mentioned.Jacks smacks macks and plenty of sharks even saw a tarpon hooked as we were trolling out to the rig one time he lost it after a couple jumps when his reel broke. Watson all you have do do is anchor up off the beach a quarter to a half mile off the beach with a big chunk of mullet on a circle hook under a balloon it will be hard not to hook a shark

Re: Matagorda Rig Question
Fishing for sharks that way you will probably catch a shark much bigger than 3 feet long
Re: Matagorda Rig Question
Anyone interested in a mid-week shark trip?
Re: Matagorda Rig Question
The rig is a great fishing spot. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve fished it. Looked back at my files and found this from 3 years ago

Re: Matagorda Rig Question
MWatson71: if you want to catch sharks then go to High Island beach (corner of 87 and 124). Launch from the beach go out about 1/2 mile you will catch 3 types: bull red, sharks and gafftops.
Sometimes you will hook up to something bigger than you want to bargain …:)
