the mother of invention.
On our Estes trip in Sep, staked my boat on Outside Beach while we fished Trout Bayou Cut (caught a lot of fish here)
While we were fishing, Aransas Bay waves were beating Outside Beach oyster fines onto my kayak, and some made it through my lap hatch. The waves were shooting it up through my scuppers.
After 3 subsequent trips, finally had the shell fines rinsed from inside my boat.
Oh, and next time we staked, I staked farther off the beach and avoided the problem.
Have always carried a spare spinning spool and back-up baitcast reel in a net bag in my lap hatch.
The canned spinning spool didn't care, but my reel picked up enough oyster fines, it had that hint of abrasion, which I traced to fines only on the mating plastic surfaces of the LW rider. And I rebuilt the reel completely.
But for a permanent solution, ordered the smallest Pelican box that would hold backup spool and bait reel.
and fits nicely in my lap hatch.
It was actually cheaper than my wallet + phone size Pelican.
The reel came out of it ok, got a nice new set of Air spool bearings, 20-lb braid, and nifty inexpensive EVA knobs from Ukraine

Re: Necessity is
I have a knock-off I got from Harbor Freight that holds my fish finder between trips. Looks like I'm gonna need to get another...

Re: Necessity is
Kirk, right off I was floored by how light this box is - and you can stand on it.
I also get to be salty with sheet bend and seized ends on my tether.

Re: Necessity is
I have 4 of the knock offs I bought at Tractor Supply for $10 ea. One I use for my fish finder storage as Kirk stated above. Then I have one I turned into a dry box for my electronics battery. One I use for my wallet, keys, phone and meds (I carry Tylenol and antacid everywhere I go). The other is just for extra dry storage when needed. Sometimes my Glock goes in that one.

Re: Necessity is
one thing, it was easy to sit at the computer with reel and ruler, and pick the exact box on the Pelican website.
They also ship cost-effective, and surprisingly quick.
I didn't mention my 3rd "pelican" box - it holds two Churchills or big torps.

Now we're talking!
My preference is Macanudo, or almost anything Maduro.
