Tough conditions, New PB
Intended to do some open bay fishing with my dad this morning, but upon arriving at the launch conditions were way off from the forecast. Sat at the ramp a few minutes watching lightning and 20 mph north winds blow across open bay and decided we should find some protected waters. At the second launch we found some reprieve, but still fought wind, rain, and a tough bite. 2 hours in and the rain and lightning had subsided. My dad had caught a small trout, and I hadn’t caught anything but a lady fish. As I was drifting a shoreline on an outgoing tide I noticed a large area of marsh with good water movement and began to bounce bottom with my smoke gold twichin shad. After a few casts I had a solid thump and set the hook, I could immediately tell it was a good fish. It held to the bottom until I got it close to the yak, once it saw the yak it made 2 runs, ripping drag each time trying to escape. Finally I managed to bring it off the bottom and in my net.
I measured it at exactly 20”, a new personal best for me. We fished a few more hours with a limited success before we called it. The bite was extremely tough, but I’m satisfied with the result of the trip. It’s good to see some larger flounder around, hopefully with the changing regulations we will see fish of this size in our waters more often.

nice fish, tough chore to find - flatties are the best food the coast has to offer.
that one's just the right size to take 3 fillets

I love to catch and eat the mighty Flounder. Enjoyed your fishing report and photos, Yak Boi. Looks like our fishing will improve as the water temps continue to fall. I've learned from Watson that the small double-rigged lure works well on the flatfish.
Hope to see you soon on the water.

Thank you, they certainly are. This fish has me wondering how many are really out there around this size or bigger that we just don’t know are there. I was smitten to catch this beauty, definitely my favorite eating fish. I would love to catch another few this size to feed the whole family. This one was pan fried, I used 1 egg, then dipped in Parmesan Panko mixed with some slap ya mama seasoning (Double dipped in the egg and panko mix). Cooked in a small amount of vegetable oil around 3 minutes each side, pure bliss.Ron Mc wrote:nice fish, tough chore to find - flatties are the best food the coast has to offer.

They are mighty and tasty indeed. Flounder are such cool fish, definitely the most prehistoric looking fish we have. Thanks for the tip, I’ve never really used a double rig but may have to try. Speaking of cooler temps... That north wind from yesterday brought some, as well as low humidity, thank god! This morning it was 79! I’d say by Monday or Tuesday the surf will be clear of tourist and dirty rough water, and will be replaced with trout green water and big juicy gamefish!Dandydon wrote:I love to catch and eat the mighty Flounder. To follow up your surf comment, this morning on the KILT Outdoors Show my fishing guide buddy Jimmy West reported that he's been observing BIRDS working the surf about 300 yards out where the water changes from brown to Trout-green... Like you, he thinks with light winds the surf might turn on for specks. They call it "Green to the beach!"

There’s no thinkin, I’m looking at it right now and it’s lookin juicy. Small 1ft rollers and about 2ft vis with some decent cloud coverage.
