DIY gaff and rig hook
I've been asked by lots of people to make this video, and I finally got it done. Seems every time I got ready to shoot it would start raining again. It's done, and I think there is enough detail that most folks should be able to create some nice toys to take offshore. Enjoy!
Re: DIY gaff and rig hook
Thanks for the info, looks like it's time to replace the old wood handle gaff with a new lightweight gaff! Did you get the gaff hooks at Roy's?

Yes, and they run $5.99 each. Ask one of the folks behind the counter for location - they're hard to find.

Nice video Glen.
I'm using a large paint roller for my rig hook w/a wooden dowl attached. Our rig hooks r very simular. Does your rig hook Itself float? My rope passes thru my front handle then attaches to a center cleet. I never thought to use my foot pegs
Again nice video

Re: DIY gaff and rig hook
The aluminum is too heavy for the handle to float on its own, but the hard foam works well, and usually just makes it easy to return to the rope at the rig after chasing down a fish.fiSh ZoMbiE wrote:Nice video Glen.

Re: DIY gaff and rig hook
I would recommend bowline knots instead of the doubled up hitch for loops. It's self clinching (won't slip) and easier to break in case you need to.
Also, for the aluminum hook where you made the slots around it to help the epoxy grip, if you add some epoxy around it before you insert, then you'll guarantee that the epoxy finds its way in there, instead of trapped air, helping adhesion and strength.

Looks good to me!!
Re: DIY gaff and rig hook
Looking to order the gaff hooks online. However, can not find them online. I just contacted Roy's by email, not sure I like the Hawaiian style gaff though it is easier to make.Prof. Salt wrote:Yes, and they run $5.99 each. Ask one of the folks behind the counter for location - they're hard to find.

Or this but of coarse I wouldn't pay $60 for it.
