you might want to adjust your sarcasm meter.

I do not understand why this bothers you so much. You are being extremely rude if you ask me! I happen to like this flog a lot. Who cares if it is a continual report of the year or a new subject each time. Does anyone really look at the number of reads and replies? Does it matter?? Anyway, a new one will probably start in 4 more weeks, so chill out!
The fishing reports are great Cuervo, keep em coming!

it gets worse...
1914 (butt-plate dated) FE Thomas Mahogany grade bait rod with tube, original taffeta sock, and hang-tag filled out by Fred, 2 blades.
1914 Talbot Niangua reel
This is a hoot with a buzz-bait.
Anti-backlash on Meeks and Talbots was an oil reservoir on each end of the spindle that you fill at the beginning of the day.
You can hear the oil whirl, and that turbulent acoustic energy is the brake on the spindle.
Image
Image
and keeps getting worse...
braided silk lines last forever if you don't let them mildew - wind them on a line winder to dry at the end of the day.
Image
I love the NLW nickel-silver reels of the teens and early 20s, and also the level-wind patents that had to compete with Marhoff before his patent (bought by Shakespeare) expired in 1928.

1st Model Pflueger Supreme, Douglas freespool patent, 1922
The rider falls and the reel goes into freespool when you back the handle; on retrieve, the rider pushes the line to either side, where the pawl picks it up and drops it in the rider.
It has a devilish freespool clutch, with the tiniest hair-like casting brake spring, tensioned by the little arrow knob.
Rather than nickel-plated brass, these reels were silver-plated brass.
Image
Before WWI, fishing was the domain of he wealthy, because only they had leisure time. If you read those magazines (many available on google e-books), fishing and yachting are reported side-by-side, and many of the trip reports include trips with the President.
After WWI, the professional class joined in, and after WWII, fishing and fishing tackle became blue collar.

Am I reading $6.50 for a silver plated rod with shipping!?!?!
Holy moley! Sign me up!

What is $6.50 from 1895 dollars to today? I know there is inflation and all, but that can't be over $100 of todays money right?
How was the sport dominated only by the upper class back in the day?

-edit-
Well blow me down

In other words, $100 in 1895 is equivalent in purchasing power to $3,010.54 in 2018, a difference of $2,910.54 over 123 years.

Derailing is gratefully acknowledged and welcome. Unlike other “fishing reports” this flog is a mingling place of ideas and experiences. Of happiness and sorrow. Of pretty girls and bass turds.

close, it's the Henshall black bass rod
Image Doc Henshall insisted you should cast with the reel on top, and retrieve with the reel on bottom.
You guys are going to get educated
https://books.google.com/books?id=nMAOA ... &q&f=false
If you run across any of the reels that made Doc's book, they're worth a small fortune.

German Silver is 60-20-20 Cu-Ni-Zn, but the zinc doesn't plate out, so the plated composition is about Muntz metal - salt resistant. No silver in it. It's the Douglas patent first model Pflueger Supreme (above) that was plated with actual silver.

they did the same thing in Pompeii - Cuervo would have fit right in
Image
there's more where that came from - that's the Henshall rod hanging in its case on the left
(then there's a separate curio with the between-the-wars fly reels, and my knives, and a separate tube stand for the cane fly rods)
Image
I got nothing - you should see Ron Gast's collection
https://luresnreels.com/

I have one e-friend, cane-rod fly fisherman, we swapped years of notes speculating in vintage tackle.
He asked me how get get started in vintage bait casting so he could go out bass fishing with his brother-in-law.
I aimed him at the Shakespeare non-level-wind (NLW) reels made in the 19-teens, because from the bottom-line Leader to the top-line Perfect, they're all quality, great-casting reels. He fishes vintage braid, nylon or silk, on cane bait rods, and that's all he takes bass fishing.
Here's a Shakespeare Alamo, c. 1905 - cheap, but a cool find.
Image

Another e-friend, a massive collector of blue collar tackle, fishes only True Temper (American Fork & Hoe) square-section tubular steel rods, and early postwar level-winds

So the Black Bass rod with reel is equiv to a little over $400 today. Well, throw a decent Shimano or Abu Garcia on a Castaway or Falcon rod and you're in the neighborhood. Seems reasonable for a good rig of the time.
Hey I need to get one of those Chubb rods
Chubs, I was wondering if you'd speak up about that before someone up and suggested it for you.

2018 is coming to an end and with it, my reports of fishing adventures and all my accumulated and shared wisdom. Today was tough going, but my swell new net really helped save some fish that otherwise would have thrown the hook boatside. It’s foldable and I look all cool like a ninja when I whip it open with a flick of my wrist.
Image
Bass were in the forecast, but sadly no lunkers. Just puny little idiots like this.
Image
The weather was FANTASTIC but the fish had other things on their little brains than eating my hook. But I still caught some. Did you?
Image
For the eight remaining members of TKF, good luck during the final days of 2018 and all your future endeavors.

9 remaining members...thank you very much.
Hey, I say keep ona floggin'!
LOVE the reports!!!
Personally, I actually think you're wasting your time and talent here with us depauperate winos, you would be much better served writing comedy for Colbert.
But, be that as it may, and with no apologies we reap the benefits of your insights and humor!
HOLD YOUR HEAD UP HIGH WITH PRIDE, AND FISH ON, CUERVO!!!!!

Remember everyone, fishing is a brother(and sister)hood, stick together and treat your fellow siblings with love & respect, because they is we!
And let me throw in Happy Holidays to One and All, for free.

“Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.”—Bob Dylan
Image
Solstice!! The reason for the season! The first day of winter and I should have stayed home to watch the fungus grow between my toes. Instead I went out to chase bass. And chase them I did. One chubby chick chased my swimbait all the way to the kayak. But she didn’t cram it into her mouth. Tease. I visited my usual spots but nobody was home. It was a good bird watchin’ and navel contemplatin’ day. Like Max Rockatansky cruising the wastelands in his V8 Interceptor, I was patrolling the wastelands away from the basscar boats. FINALLY I hooked a couple.
Image
They were little guys and I noticed there was a spooky full moon rising over the nekkid trees. THAT’s IT!! These are werebass. People turn into wolves so it only makes sense that shad turn into bass. Presto! Werebass! I don’t know why nobody has figured this out before. It takes a stable genius. That I’ll tell you. Many people are saying it.
Image
Not many people were catching that I saw, but a group of fellows was cleaning a crapload of tilapia when I landed. They were friendly and having fun and LOTS of beer. So that’s cool. With the government shutdown courtesy of the weird, angry guy who plays president on tv, production of “Hangin’ with the Fishes” will be on hiatus (pronounced Hi Ate Us). So all nine of you (thank you for the updated subscription data, Native Son) will have to find other ways to destroy brain cells and learn astonishing fishing facts.
Image
And as a Yuletide gift, I will now post all my fishing spot GPS locations. In binary because I watched “Interstellar”’last week and was inspired by Matthew McConaheyheyHEY.

Not sure exactly why but when I read your posts I think of a song from my high school days (Fleetwood Mac "Hypnotized"). Somehow could imagine you writing the song and the lyrics.
Anywho, am never quite sure where we're headed but always enjoy the ride. Later!

Saw that moon, wondered what effects it was having on the denizens of the deep and those that walk the earth. Poor shad, it’s about time they turned the tables and became the diner and not the dinee.

There doesn’t seem to be a lot of bright spots in the world with attractive governance or governors. This mission to Mars is looking better all of the time, but the fishing opportunities seem limited. Venus seems to be a hellhole. Aren’t there some promising moons around Saturn?
