Verticle jigging

Post by Ryanh1801 »

Just did this for the first time off the east coast of FL and was shocked at how effective it was and the great shoulder workout it provided. Anyone do this out of Corpus? How well does it work and what all have you caught doing it. Thinking about picking up a rod and reel that can handle it.

LOTS of fish can be had with a jig. Depends on the type of fish on how rapid or hard you have to jig but most of the lift and reel jigging works well around the rigs or in a school you find on sonar.
I've caught bluefish, snapper, trigger fish myself.

Awesome Good to know. I found it to be pretty enjoyable in a painful way.

I caught blue runners, lady fish, kings, Spanish, and bluefish today vertical jigging around the rigs this morning. I've caught cobia and jacks that way too.

You can catch ANYTHING on a vertical jig. I often will leave a ribbon fish drifting behind me and have a rod in my hand jigging around the rig. Not much is more exciting that getting a big bite while verticals jigging.

Oh I waste plenty of my time watching his stuff. lol Going to go ahead and get a rod and reel together. Is 50# braid a good choice for main line? what kind of leader do ya use?

I use 30 lb braid on my jigging rod and tie a swivel on the braid and a 24" piece of 50 lb mono for the leader tied to the jig.
If I get bit off I use a 12" piece of 60 lb wire leader I make myself.

I use 50lb braid, FG know to 50lb flouro or mono leader about 6ft long and then a short piece of wire.

I normally go braid straight to my wire leader for jigging.

Now i'm really interested. I guess you were using a smaller jig for Pompano? Was this at the rigs or closer in?

Thanks
