Sheepheads

Post by Fishtolive »

Last weekend, we were down at CC for Spring Break with the kids but didn’t bring kayaks.
We fished mostly at Packery channel and caught numerous large sheepheads (17-20”). But lost a ton of hooks and weights due to break-off and snags.
The kids had a blast since they never see sheepheads that size.

Cool. What type of bait and rigs were you guys using?

You just drop the rigs down into the rocks and wait? How long about between bites?

We rigged 2 diff way and they worked about the same.
1. Carolina rig with 3/4 oz sinker and 1/0 or 2/0 hook.
2. Knocker rig with 1 oz sinker and 1/0 or 2/0 hook.
We started out at the middle of the jetty and caught only small fish.
Until one of the older fishermen told us to go at the end of the jetty. Then we started pulling in the big sheepheads. We fished in the channel side and caught one average about 20 minutes.
The next day, we came back and after some test& trail, we realized that they were biting on the North beach side of the jetty.
You are right about fishing near the rocks that why we snagged and lost so many hooks/sinkers.
We also lost many fish because of broke off at the rock since my kids used only light tackle with 12-15 lb line.
We were amazed that the sheepheads bited on dead shrimps too.

The kids looked up on YouTube to find the best way to cook the fish and they had a blast.
We will be better prepared next year.
