Super buggy, Cuervo.
Girdle bugs?

Re: What did you tie today?
With all the crane flies buzzing around everywhere last few weeks (sure sign Spring is here) decided to try a new pattern.
Ones I've tied in the past were more realistic, but work to tie, with extended abdomens you had to tie in after creating them off the hook.
This is just a modified floating spider, just a thinner body and smaller thorax.
I think I'll cut off those inner 2 front legs.
We'll see what the fish think.
Now I just need to find a good freshwater venue close to the house, which for me happens to be Pearland.
Plenty of saltwater options, but freshwater harder to come by.

Good for bass, trout, panfish, carp, and probably lots of other fish!

I like your Yuk Bug.
Re: What did you tie today?
Cuervo,
Might try a Bitch Creek Nymph. I thought for a second the one above with the orange was one. Good looking bugs.

Re: What did you tie today?
Nice! Do you use belly or back hair? Like the pattern of the two colors together.

Belly.kickingback wrote:Nice! Do you use belly or back hair? Like the pattern of the two colors together.
I ordered some more belly hair in some additional colors. I liked how the two toned came out and now want to do more. I packed the hair a little tighter with the two colors so hopefully they will fish similar to the monotone ones. The best ones I’ve done float pretty low on the water surface and bubble and dive with a soft strip and then slowly rise back to the surface.
Re: What did you tie today?
The divers I tied yesterday saw a lot of action today. The bass loved them. Caught fish all morning and color didn’t seem to matter.

Nice progression, Karst! Makes me wish I’d gone fishing today. Instead, I did work around home. Found where the local fox enjoyed a chicken dinner in my back yard, courtesy of my neighbor’s chicken flock. He left me some nice feathers so I tied these.

Good job re purposing those feathers Cuervo, but couldn't you have carved your hooks from some chicken bones?Cuervo Jones wrote:Nice progression, Karst! Makes me wish I’d gone fishing today. Re: What did you tie today?
The bones left with the fox. There was nothing but a pile of delightful feathers. I’m leaving a note for him to get some grizzly hackles for me next time. Hopefully he can read English. I’m not sure what language foxes are most literate in.

I also scored a roadkill grey squirrel with a beautiful tail yesterday. Got some streamers to tie with that fella!

I like those badger feather streamers. I’m going to have raise some chickens.
Road kill, there’s probably a lot of missed opportunities there.

Re: What did you tie today?
I have a few road-killed squirrel tails myself, and a mink tail in the freezer I need to deal with.
Years ago I collected some smaller quills from a DOR porcupine I came across in Amarillo, still haven't tied with them.
I would love to have a nice skunk tail, seems like they would make some great streamers, but I haven't summoned up the courage to collect one!

Re: What did you tie today?
Balanced crawfish and shrimp. The shrimp is the same shrimp I’ve done in the past, but on a bigger hook and with the bead forward on a #24 florist pin instead of at the 60 degree bend. The balanced type tie lets me use any size bead I want and that wasn’t true in the previous version.
The crawfish is basically a balanced leech with eyes, legs and some marabou claws. I put a back on it but decided I didn’t like it so I pulled it off.
It worked well enough in my “test” lake.
I still like the Balanced Leeches more than the crawfish.

Re: What did you tie today?
Nice!!!
Re: What did you tie today?
Really, I think plain old olive works best out on the lake. But, it gets fun to add colors and experiment.kickingback wrote:Nice!!!
A young man that regularly fishes the lake came by in a boat yesterday before the front rolled in and was slaying the fish on a mostly white plastic floating frog. His frog inspired my mostly white divers.
These new ones might all be a touch big. The ones that work best don’t float very high and slowly float back to the surface after a dive. I can always take away deer hair later. I finally got around to ordering some of those two sided shaving razors off of Amazon. That should cut way down on the time it takes to trim them with scissors.
I found a cheaper source of belly hair. I hope it’s good. I still want to make these work for redfish. I think I might get more deer hair in some pinks and red for them.
