Fishing with ill/special need/less fortunate kids

Post by MobyYack »

Does anyone know and/or want to take some kids fishing one day in July? Galveston bay. This is an idea in progress. Not trying to do anything complicated. Simple cast netting, basic kayak safety info, paddling and fishing in a shallow safe area, etc. All ideas are welcome. I have one spare kayak to donate plus plenty of tackle.

I no longer live in the area. My wife and I moved to the Coastal Bend about 2 years ago. Having said that, let me know when in July and I will seek if I can arrange to make a trip back to H-town.

Did someone say Galveston Honey Holes???

I have an extra kayak and time I can donate for a day. Are you organizing this? I feel that there could be some safety issues involved...

Yes I'm organizing it. Safety is my number one priority which is why I want to a do a calm shallow area.

Do you need some sort of insurance or coverage for something like this? Seems like liability might be a concern.

Or have their guardian sign a hold harmless waiver. Insurance might be a good option, and the insurance company is probably going to want them to sign waivers as well. YES, we know.. Pain in the rear right. Cuervo is just looking out for you.

There is a company/organization that does kayak training and launches from the Galveston Island State Park at Oak Bayou. I don't know the name of the group but I see them there frequently. They could probably provide you with a ready-made "hold harmless" and have suggestions about legality.

I have access to some kayaks and two teenage sons that would love to help. PM me when you have some ideas about dates and I will try to help.

Neat idea.

I think there are some kayak rental/sight seeing businesses in the Galveston area; you can probably try to contact them to work something out. I'm sure they have all the waivers in place, kayaks, not to mention ACA certified instructors.

Here's the link to a random kayak excursion ...
http://ospreyseakayak.com/wp-content/up ... 2014Waiver.
I think this one is a good start. Ill modify this document and post it soon.

I propose any date from July 15 - 31. Trying to focus on a weekend but I am available any day in that window. So I propose
Saturday July 15, Saturday July 22 or Saturday July 29 but any day is as good as the next to me.
Tiki Island/Jones Bay, Bayland Park, Kemah/Seabrook Area? Those are some fairly safe area I know. Please post location ideas! Preferably free parking/entrance, etc.

Thanks for the reply's and feedback. Please keep it coming!

Recently there has been a lot of unnecessary traffic on TKF. Let's see if those same people willing to type crap will type anything supportive here
