Galveston Trout Action -- 6/24/2017

Post by JMiller »

Location: Galveston Bay shell reef
Water Depth: 4 feet
Tide: Strong incoming (AM); High tide and 1' above normal
Lure: Pink Skitterwalk

Enjoyed the lightning show early this morning that was flashing around Freeport and Baytown. Kept watching the radar and showers were popping up all around me, so I decided to just fish a couple hours before the thunderstorms started firing up in the area.

Reached the reef at 5:30 AM and caught a nice 26.50" trout on the first cast using a steady and super fast retrieve.

I'm thinking it's going to be an epic morning, but I struggled the next half hour only catching a couple 18" trout. The bite picked back up during the minor period and I caught some more quality fish from 20" to 25" using a slower retrieve.

After 8:00 AM the bite completely shut off. Clouds started getting dark so I called it quits and headed back in. While paddling back in, I caught a random 24.50" trout on Gulp mantis shrimp jigged on the bottom of a deep boat channel.

Total tally for the morning was 14 trout between 19" and 26.50". All catch and release except for 1 that didn't make it.

I am glad to see you found all the trouts I sent your way. I felt my time was better spent chasing Pygmy redfish today.

All I caught today was a baby redfish too. Where are the big reds this time of year?
