First trip of 2017

Post by Coachsmills »

I ended up taking December, January, and February off from fishing but was finally able to get an afternoon trip in with JGJ a few days ago.

He beat me to the coast by a little over an hour and picked up a limit of trout and a couple flounder while waiting on me to get there. Once I arrived, we decided to head in a different direction than usual and explore a new area for redfish.

We spent the day in about 2 feet of water, fishing around heavy patches of submerged shell. My fish came on a super spook jr, Bass Assassin sea shads, and a Strike Pro Hunchback. They were all solid fish that measured 27 7/8, two 26 3/4, a 25, 24, and a 22. Grant found 5 or 6 reds also to complete the slam with some nice sized ones as well. Hopefully they'll still be hanging around when tourney season kicks off.

Nice catch!!! I see that you have a viking kayak. I just bought one last month and i've taken out once to aransas pass. How do you have your kayak setup?

Thanks guys. I yanked the topwater right out of the mouths of the first two fish that blew up on me but settle in after that. It had been too long I guess.

I am a minimalist as far as adding stuff to my kayak goes. I keep 90% of my gear/tackle in my tackle pod. I keep my check it stick under the front bungees around the bow and have a milk crate in the back with 4 PVC rod holders and a 360 degree light on it. That's really about it. I don't like an anchor trolley and never really cared for a rudder on my kayaks.
