High winds, low tides, cannibal redfish 1-29-17

Post by Cuervo Jones »

Just another weekend on the bay for Cuervo. I fish when I can and if that means less than perfect conditions, wellsir, I grit my teeth like Randolph Scott and face the day with the grim determination of a proctologist preparing to rout out Chris Christie. Strong winds have blasted the water out of my trout hole. It's about a foot and a half down and previously unseen oyster reefs were sticking up over the whitecaps. Temperature at the surface was 55 compared to 66 last week. My trout mojo was dead as Gary Coleman and left me makin' some diff'rent strokes with my pedals. Some goofy little redfish kept the skunk ape at bay by trying to eat their smaller relatives. But the joke was on them because it was a fugazzi with hooks! I could have plunged into the nearby marsh and sought out some more reds sunning in the shallows like bathing beauties or bunched up in deeper holes, but I decided to explore some of the bay that is normally covered by briny waters in order to see what I'm always snagging and banging my kayak off of. Hopefully I'll have a more titillating report next weekend TKF. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. Incidentally, the forum is freaking out on me and refusing to post my beautiful photos in a sensible way. Just another sign of the times.

At least you didn't get skunked! I was planning to hit the bay but the conditions sucked, been there and done that way too many times!

You're back! I was worried that an executive order had banished you. The world's a weird place lately.

The ole redfish cork lure. I haven't seen one of those since uncle SaltyKat left us for greener pastures.

Pro tip: take them out of the packaging before fishing them. I found the fish get hooked a lot easier when the Roland Martin magic corks are not in the little plastic bags. My hard won knowledge is yours free to use.
