I would also recommend some kind of beat stick in case you hook into a larger sized cobia. Don't beat 'em unless you know they're legal, but better safe than having a broken ankle.

Yep, great idea for first time. You get to check out other kayak setups. Find one or two kayakers to stick with.

Should be a really great time. If this is your first trip to the middle coast you are in for a treat. Last minute conditions CAN change. You may want to also consider a PLAN B at Bird Island. A good way to double down on a long drive.

Hey Brad, glad to see you can make it. I added you to the list. No telling how many PACK members will be going on this. We have 74 kayakers signed up for this trip as of now and this doesn't even include PACK members. Add possible PACK members in and we could possibly break 100 kayakers. It's going to be awesome!!

Ok so I plan on being there. I also have a question about a friend of mine (highschool student that I have been mentoring) that I would like to join me, however he only has a two seater kayak. Will that work, or would it be prudent to find one to rent for a day or two?

Personally, I don't like most tandems offshore. Both of you might reach for a fish at the same time a small swell comes by and before you can blink, your both in the water. Not saying all are like this. I do not know your craft, skills or size of paddlers. Just making a general statement. There are one or two Hobie's I would trust.

That makes sense, however, it would just be him in the tandem since I have my own yak I will be in. I hear ack has a pretty good rental deal? Is this true? I would rather him be in something sea worthy that he can handle well than trying to handle a tandem off shore by himself. I realize this makes my previous post a little pointless but the more I think about it the more I would rather have him safe than put him in a tricky situation he can't handle.

whiskerfrisker.... it depends on what type of 2-seat kayak your friend has. I would rent like you had mentioned. If you do get a rental, I'd jump on that sooner rather than later. Everyone is going to be looking for a rental. ACK has two locations in Houston you can rent from. Check both locations to see about getting the rental you are looking for.

Anyone else interested in going on this trip? If so, post up here. Just fyi.... please read the original post and make sure that y'all know about the backup date in case there is bad weather/conditions. A few years ago, everything went good and we had it on the projected date. Last summer things were not good on the original date and we had to go to the backup date. The backup date worked out just fine and the event was a huge success!
