Flow rate question

Post by Dormin »

Last September we took our Trail Life Troop on kayak/canoe trip from Smithville to Plum Park. It was a blast. From what I can remember the flow rate was around 700+ cfs. I looked today and it is 5500+ cfs. Age structure is 12-21 with adults. My question is concerning our younger paddlers, what flow rate would you deem too much? Trip is first part of June so I would expect rate to come down by then.

If you go to the individual section of each river you will see recommended CFS for each one. The section you mentioned is recommended at 500-3,000 as ideal.

I wouldn't try it with youngsters, unless they have experience, and you have some really good releases signed. Problem I can see is the current sweeping canoes into trees and tipping over, don't think there are any serious rapids to contend with. I went for a short float last weekend and fought the current while trying to fish, and it won.
