colorado river - best segment for fishing and camping

Post by Datchew »

I'm planning a 3 day (2 night) where I want to focus on bass fishing but with easy areas to camp as well.
Planning late April - early May.
Any suggestions for a preferred segment of the river to do this?

I'd love to hear suggestions for the same on the Guadalupe.

On the Colorado I've done from 969 to Bastrop.
On the Guad, I've done Edge Falls Rd to Guadalupe State Park.

I have done 969 to Bastrop (~14 miles) overnight I think 5 times. It is a favorite weekend trip of mine and has decent fishing, one big island half way between launch and takeout. I have done two nights three days from Bastrop to Smithville (~25 miles) once. It was good fishing as well and there are two islands great for camping. I guess it depends how many miles you want to paddle each day. I like about 7-9 with today's normal flows on the colorado, gives me plenty of time to go as slow as I want and fish a lot. I've read trip reports where people do like 25 in a day. I don't know why you would do that but people do. There is also Plum Park on the Colorado about halfway between Smithville and La Grange.

Just did a 2 nighter from Smithville to LaGrange. It was beautiful, great bass fishing. Couldn't find my luck on the cats, but had lots of reports of major catfishing.

Here's a 42 sec video of my trip.
