Local report from last weekend says that 183 to 973 was really choked with weeds, but below 973 usually isn't as bad. I've done numerous trips down the river in my slayer propel with no issues due to shallow water, just have to pull the drive in time, but weeds are a different story, that's a pain. If you do 973 to little web it's about 8 hrs first day and 4 hrs next, fishing.

Thanks Infidel. I am most concerned now about access at the FM 973 bridge and leaning towards FM 969 to Fisherman's Park.

It is a doable trip in a Hobie pro angler 12? It's all that I have right now and I would love to do a trip. Thanks.

I went by the 969 put in today (Sunday/9-7-14) on the way back from Austin, and it looked really good. There was some grass, but plenty of paddling lanes. Water was a little off color due to rain Saturday night, but still looked really nice!!! I am really looking forward to the trip!!!

Doable yes. Damage to drive yes. I would leave the drive at home and paddle. There are a few slack water sections it could be used, however I wouldn't think it would be worth it with the rest of the skinny water.
Just my 0.02$.
Some of the group will fish little and get to the camp island. Others will fish hard and barley beat sundown to the island.

Hirsch: I will be there with two companions. Looking forward to this Great Adventure. If I had a choice I would select 969 to Fishermans Park.

I have not been able to get hold of David and get his on the spot report about the bridge at 973 so we will launch at FM 969 and pull out at Fisherman's Park in Bastrop. I will start a headcount next weekend and line up a shuttle.

I guess I should give fair warning... the rain usually follows me when I camp :).

Combine that with the weather forecasters saying this will be a wetter-than-normal fall due to El Niño...
We just had our wettest August in 7 years in spite of the drought, and single wettest August day in 20 years...

We just might get flooded out this campout! :) :D  :horse:

It used to be called the "Hobo Camp", but changed the name to "Bluebonnet Campground", I seem to recall it being $10/night.

Not sure if they have their own website, but this is the YP link.

The old Hobo / now Bluebonnet Campground is right off HWY 71 on 1209. (307 FM 1209, 512-332-2267). 1209 will then dead end just a few miles into 969 just SE of the 969 river bridge. I was curious as to whether you meant the RV park directly across the hwy from the launch???

If you were meaning the RV park across the hwy (and I can't find the name/# right now), they don't allow tent camping. About 3-4 years ago, John and I pulled in the night before and "talked" them into letting us stay and then leave my truck two nights for a fee... they relented, but we had to rent a regular RV space. I've called since then to see if they'd do again--- even primitive camping way off in the grassy areas -- especially when I knew there would be several people that would take advantage of it and $$ for them. It was a no-go. Sad, 'cause they have so much land that they could offer a service to the river people & even a great location for shuttle service!

I'll probably pull in solo the night before at Bluebonnet. Wondering who else will camp the night before?

I'm planning on staying at bluebonnet Friday night. I called today and confirmed $10 per night per person. He said we could have a campfire.

He's a "character", lol!! When we arrived one evening before a trip it was raining and we were huddling up under the racked yaks... or sloshing through mud...before it let up so we could make camp. Next thing ya' know he comes with some big LOGS -- like 4'+, stuffed them down in a barrel, poured about 5 gallons of kerosene on it and we had a ROARING bonfire!!!!!!!! lol. He has always come by to see what we're up to, pull up a chair and shoot the breeze for awhile, lol. Only problem that night was the smell from the kerosene smoke which permeated the area -- I think it was embedded in our nostrils for the rest of the trip, lol!!!

Depending on rain it should be good in about 9 days.

Time to call for a head count. Who is in?

Firefly is ready. Hopefully the rain let's up, river down, sandbar cleaned off and a good trip! Gear is pretty much re-packed and ready to go since the Buffalo trip. I'll plan to be at Bluebonnet Campground on Friday afternoon.

I and my rain plan to be there :D. Well, maybe we can talk the rain into leaving us alone.
I've been fighting a bit of a bug but hope to be better by then.

I should probably plan on coming down Friday night and camping at Bluebonnet since that would be a *long* drive to make early Saturday morning.

No problem, Rod! Since the Buffalo River disaster with my leaking tent.... it's been sprayed down twice with waterproofing .....plus I'll have 2-3 tarps in my gear if needed    That Brazos trip is firmly embedded in my memory as an adventure!!!

Feel better. We'll see you at camp.
