Rigged out my "New" Scupper Pro

Post by ANMRanch »

I recently picked up a SPTW that was in good shape, but needed a few things.
Having had a SPTW before, I had an idea of what I was wanting to do with it.
First thing was to figure out a rudder system. I didn't find anything that seemed like it would work. So I had to fabricate it.
I used an aluminum 1x3 x 1/8 thick rectangle tubing and cut it apart to I would have a 1x3 angle and cut 2 pieces 4" long.
I then cut about a 45 degree angle front to back on the 3" side. This would make the main body of the housing.

I used a piece of solid Teflon 3/4" wide 1" tall and 4"long long.
This made the middle and pivot part of the assembly.

I used two stainless steel bolt to hold the assembly together.

I then drilled a 17/64 hole vertical in the end of the teflon block for the pivot hole. On the other end I cut a groove in the block for the rudder to fit it.

I used a 1/8 sheet of aluminum to cut a "river" rudder (wider at the bottom and barely below the keel line).

The hardest part was trying to drill a tiny hole for a pin in a 1/4" SS rod. That didn't work too well. I ended up using a die to thread the rod and used a nylon SS nut. I heated up and bent the rod for the top and the treads are on the bottom.

All the aluminum edges where grounded and sanded round to remove any and all burs.

All in all for the rudder assembly I might have $30ish in it.

I used the perception rudder pedal assembly for the pedals. (I like the ridged aluminum slides).
I did have to sand off the ridges on the back of the pedal mounts for the bolts to work. I also trimmed about 2-3" off the front of the aluminum slides (to allow for more travel).

I had to add a hatch infront of the seat to run the cables through. I used 1/16 cable and cable tubing for the cables. I attached the cable to the rudder with some nifty quick adjustable things (can't recall the name).

I was able to test it out last week and so far it is pretty good, just need to trim the pedals a little on the inside corner to allow for maximum travel.

After adding the rudder I added bungee cord the the bow so I could keep my net and measuring stick within reach, yet secure.

I then added some new bungee to the tankwell and added clips to end of cord as well as hooks to hold the bungee cord so I would have more options invade I need to add something more bulky in the back.

I found the only place possible for the flush mount holders behind the seat and they just barely fit there.

Put a Scotty mount in the front and to eyes up near it, one for a paddle leash and the other for a rod leash.

After added the flush mounts, I decided it needed a rocket launcher.
I had some spare bungee cord and used it to secure the rods. It's kinda hard to see in the picture, but it's the black loops on the holder. Just pull it over the reel and the rod cannot fall out if I was to turtle.
