Easy camping food
Re: Easy camping food
Are you planning on taking any sort of stove? Pre-cooked fajita meat can be quickly warmed up and thrown on torillas. A bunch of sandwiches are always easy. Tunafish out of the can. 50pc mcnuggets (bring TP). Cheese, meat and crackers.

X2 ... I have backpacked / river tripped all over the country with the quick cook pasta / rice mixed with foil packed chicken and tuna. Quick, light, and easy to pack. Add a little salsa, or fresh made pico. It's home cooking.Miniblue wrote:Try couscous any flavor you like. Mix in canned tuna or chicken. Cooks quick add boiling water.
Those noodle or rice packs work well also, but cook 7 minutes. Mix in meat as well.

Its the lightest food to pack and the easiest to prepare. Add hot water and its done. And it tastes pretty good.
I keep several with me on our Boy Scout campouts just in case the food the Scouts prepare isn't any good...It doesn't happen often but it does happen!
We need some kind of good tasting garlic bread stuff to go along with the Mountain House Lasagna, Spaghetti and Stroganoff!

Re: Easy camping food
Whattaburger on padre island has a boat dock in back- perhaps they need to start a "on the water" delivery service. If Pizza hut joins in it would be great!!

I can't believe no one said hobo meals. Were none of you scouts ever? Take foil, fill with either seasonsed raw ground beef, turkey or whatever with frozen veggies or thinly sliced potatoes. Layer them, wrap foil up tight and throw it in the fire. Give it a turn once in a while and awesomeness in a pouch is what you end up with.
Re: Easy camping food
Yea, except when I made them we used the old fashioned one pound coffee cans (full pound) that you opened with a key and were all metal.Bad Luck Guy wrote:I can't believe no one said hobo meals. Bacon, bacon, bacon, eggs (deshelled and packed in container), potatoes, onion(s), pancake mix, and what ever else you' d like to pan cook over the fire. Usually when we're camping fresh fish is on the menu, and the above ingedients are all you need ( season to taste) Oh, almost forgot, are beer and whiskey considered camp food?

Re: Easy camping food
I was given a solar cooker. It's basically a heavy duty cardboard that's foiled on one side and folds flat. You unfold it and its shaped to concentrate the sun rays onto a dark pot place in a cooker bag in the center. Last year on a Matagorda island trip, I set it up with some Piccadillo one morning and when we came back for lunch, we had hot Piccadillo tacos with no need to set up the BBQ. Next day, I pu some yellow rice and water in before we left and came back to the perfect side to half shell redfish that we grilled fresh. Awesome little contraption but you do bad to watch the weather as it obviously has to be sunny for use.
Re: Easy camping food
MRE's. Get them from the surplus store or online, freakin delicious. 1 is enough to last you all day, and is neatly packed into a small package. Main course and side dishes. Comes with heater packs and you heat it right in the box/bag it came with. Several of them are actually pretty delicous, some suck. Come with coffee, toilet paper, some sort of juice mix, and alittle bottle of tabasco. I wouldn't eat them more than 4 or so days in a row though.

Re: Easy camping food
That's a staple for me when camping. Hamburger, sliced potatoes, onions, peppers, carrots, and seasoning in heavy duty foil wrapped loosely into a square package. For supreme ease (or on a camping trip where I'll be having my fair share of beer) I'll premake them at home. Open the cooler, plop them on some medium intensity coals, flip once or twice and enjoy. Delicious. Your camp mates will be jealous.Bad Luck Guy wrote:I can't believe no one said hobo meals. Were none of you scouts ever? Sardines & saltines!
Trust me, it is a whole lot better and nutritious than you think.
And you have you choice of flavors: mustard, olive oil, catsup, louisiana hot sauce.
No refrigeration required, good protien, omega 3s, carbs, salt.

Re: Easy camping food
If you have a Coleman stove, fry up a pak of bacon, put in one of those styrofoam things for keeping tortillas warm. Then fry your some eggs in the bacon grease, put in warmer, then take a roll of bisquits, pull apart so you have two thin bisquits, and fry in leftover bacon grease till brown on one side, flip and do the other side. You'll have a nice breakfast with bacon, eggs, and bisquits.

MRE's, canned meat, canned fruit, dried fruit, snack bars, dry oatmeal packets, tuna packets, pork and beans, spam, leftovers wrapped in heavy duty foil, canned soups, or even crackers and cheese...ie Poggy Bait.
Re: Easy camping food
Individually foil wrapped bean, bacon and cheese tacos. Freeze them and throw them in the ice chest before you go. When you get there you can place a few on your exhaust manifold to reheat. Add Pico and you have a meal that will stick to your ribs.

Re: Easy camping food
On the Neches River trip I brought a pair of grilled boneless chicken breasts and augmented them with ramen noodles. Sounds a bit sparse, but it lasted two days and I had plenty of GORP and coffee to augment. I find that I always bring more food than I need. I packed 3000 calories a day in five separate bags. I actually ended up eating only two days of dehydrated food! x2 on the Mountain house product. I think those rice sides packets would be a tasty change, and a packet of beef jerky makes a delicious change up. If you just sit down and think about what you can cook on a grill, and add a cup of water to, preparing a delicious and nutritious meal on the river for a couple of days can be fun and save you weight and space.

The easiest camping food I know is to eat your buddies food as fast as he makes it, do this until he is full., and then sit back and enjoy the view and watch him clean up while I have one of his beers!
Be sure you bring enough food for you just in case he runs out, you can trade some to him for beer.
