Advice for Brazos River Trip?

Post by Warthog »

I'm thinking about doing a multi-day trip on the Brazos River from SH7 to FM979. Does anybody know if this stretch is kayakable right now? I'm willing to drag some, but I would not want it to turn into a hiking trip... Also, if anyone has any fishing tips or tips in general for this section it would be much appreciated. I will be targeting cats, bass, and maybe gar (CPR of course).

I can only attest to the stretch between 7 and 413 being doable with a tolerable amount of lining/dragging. I have not been below 413 more than a couple of miles. 979 takeout is a real challenge under any conditions though.

Thanks, Kim and DarrellS, for the replies. What is it about the take-out that is difficult? I'd like to know what I'm in for at the end of the journey. I'll probably bring a gun for ducks/hogs. Any luck with ducks there? Hope you have some luck with the cast and blast DarrellS; I'm interested to see how it goes.

I made a recon trip to 979 several years ago and concluded I needed a winch recover my boat and gear.
