A Skin On Frame Challenger
A Skin On Frame Challenger
The first thing was to add a keel stringer....
A look at the original hull..
I an using the original forms at 24'' spacing to make patterns..
The gunwale is lowered about 3'' so from the keel to the top of it is 5''(So the height of the side went from 8'' to 5'')
The frames are finished and 4 are secured to the strong back with the keel stringer.. with the next set of stringers in place, which would make up the bottom pannel in a wood boat..

I moved ,what would have been, the original top of the side panel in creating a tumblehome side...hopefully for more wind resistance...the cockpit is 48'' long...
Frome the bow..
The stern..

Re: A Skin On Frame Challenger
This will be a good small lake flat water boat...adding a rudder being they work fantastic wile drifting with the wind etc..etc..
Ought to be a challenge to make this look good poking through the skin...

Re: A Skin On Frame Challenger
Thanks Neon....Got this on the lake a few times tracks good without rudder and it weighs 30lbs. with rudder seat and all....
Re: A Skin On Frame Challenger
See you changed out the sealector foot steering for your wooden version, cost saving/weight saving ??
very compact I like it, how does it compare in operation ??
I definitly want to try a SOF when I get caught up on my present projects, that should be the fall I hope.

Re: A Skin On Frame Challenger
The wood version requires less foot travel just ankle flex, the other I had to move the leg back and forth bending at the knee.....
Re: A Skin On Frame Challenger
Finaly got some lake pics....
Re: A Skin On Frame Challenger
perfectly at home in her natural element, very nice indeed, and with her weight getting her to and fro should be a breeze.

Re: A Skin On Frame Challenger
Well this has been my go to fishing boat for 3 years......caught a heck of a lot of fish out of this boat....
I changed the rudder system couple years back....Just move your foot to the side...
The rudder is 1/8'' aluminum..
The old rudder and new one are basically the same inside the rope used to raise and lower the blade...

Re: A Skin On Frame Challenger
very nice as usual, why the switch to aluminum ?nice clean up and down hauls.
Still haven't got round to a SOF yet, busy on other projects, did just finish a TV 32-15 for a good friend (He wired up my new workshop)

Re: A Skin On Frame Challenger
Well the wood blades were trying to float up in the water... The aluminum is the way to go..I just sandwiched it in-between 1/4'' ply.....
Getting ready to build another Challenger SOF only I increased the beam by 14% for a 265 lb. paddler..

Re: A Skin On Frame Challenger
to get over the rudder floating I have a length of bungee cord as part of the down-haul which will hold the rudder down but give enough for the blade to kick up should you hit obstruction, my rudder is quite a bit larger for sailing, so very buoyant.
