I have a Coleman lantern on a 5ft rod. I just put it in a rod holder behind me and it lights up the night. Don't even need a flashlight to tie hooks on or remove fish, it lights up the entire yak and area around it.

Maybe I missed it but my 2 cents regardless of what lighting you chose, there are some inexpensive ways to supplement your preferred method. Wear white (or light) clothing with possible reflective material. I've seen a guy in a forest green canoe (the type from Academy) wearing a very dark/black t-shirt, dark jeans, and navy life jacket and no reflective material. His lighting was a small "battery powered" lantern that from the front was not visible; mainly a silhouette. Had he been wearing lighter colors he would have been more visible. Enough is debatable but he would have been at least more visible.

I've seen a guy that placed those white high intensity reflective stickers on his paddle blades. The kind you get at Lowe's, Northern Tool, etc. for trailers. He has a smaller battery operated light above his milk crate, but every time he takes a stroke there's an alternating side-side to "flash" from behind. He said he was more concerned with someone coming up behind him since that's his blind spot. If near shore lighting or a PB'er is shining a spot light his direction, he "wrist rolls" the paddle which creates forward flashing in addition to his headlamp. It definitely keeps him from blending into any background shore lights. He's got a couple more on the bow and milk crate. Cost him less than $5. You can't tell me the kayak bunch can't be creative about solutions to increasing visibility at night.

Was also looking into lights for the Hobie PA. This is what I found. I do a lot of fishing in the swamps & marshes were kayaks arn't normally seen. Does anyone have any reviews about the WildCat LED Lights?

This is what I use. I am thinking about adding more light, just to be safe.

A vessel or motorboat when underway between sunset and sunrise in all weather must have and exhibit the lights prescribed by the commandant of the Coast Guard for boats of its class.

Looking at http://www.uscgboating.org/fedreqs/default.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, page 29, it seems that just having a flashlight is good enough, regulation-wise.

From everything I've read, that is correct (if not someone please post the regs).

That being said, its like having to have a life jacket in the boat and having it on or riding a bike at night in all black with no reflectors on a dark highway! While its legal to go with just a flashlight, it might get you run over and killed!!!! Only time I go with just a flashlight is if I'm somewhere I know boats cant go.

I have a Hobie PA and I also have the full "array" of Wildcat Lighting led's. Let me say that they are great and they work. I have had shrimp jump into my kayak before (could have been due to them being chased by the trout that were tearing them up) while anchored. The lights are bright and do exactly what Wildcat Lighting says they will. I also have a Yak Attack light that I will use at night, but I am using it less and less as a marker light, now that I have my Wildcat lights. My .02.

Have both a YakAttack VISICarbon Pro & the VISIPole II....can't say enough about the quality of the the components and the dynamic & passive warning/identification created by the LED light and fluorescent orange flag. Image

.........if operating under a tight budget, you can build your own 5 LED kayak marker light pole for well under $20, for another $5 you could add a orange bike flag to the pole.

When fishing at night with lights, does location matter or can you be anywhere in the water and the fish will come to you? Also, where are you guys going at night that is safe for fishing?
