Colorado River Dogs Trip II

Post by Hirsch »

The Colorado River Dogs gathered Saturday morning with a few new faces and launched from FM 973 heading toward Little Webberville Park. Old faces included Guad, DNR, Yaktipper, Saffra and myself. Newfaces included yaktippers friend Keira, Trapper, his grandson Jordan and for the day FisherofMen.

The river was down easily 2 1/2' to 3' with much of the water vegetation like elephant ears dying of thirst. It was low enough that there was almost constantly a light current pushing us along. Water was almost gin clear with depths of 4-5 foot easily visible. Plenty of bass including numerous smallmouth Guadalupe bass hybrids were caught. I have no idea the actual count but think 60 or more would not be unreasonable. Unfortunately FisherofMen had obligations Sunday morning and had to part company about 1:00 and get one to hit the park by Dark. It would have been nice to have his company last night. One the that struck me is there seems a steadily growing number of fly fishers. This trip included FisherofMen, Guad, DNR and Keira making it almost half the group.

Camp was reached with plenty of time to set up and relax a bit before a dinner of red bean, rice and sausage. Good conversation continued after dinner until about 9:00 when everyone called it a night. It was a slightly cloudy morning and the first of us began moving about 7:45 this morning. Again every relaxed in no hurry and enjoyed an extended breakfast with leisurely oacking getting on the water about 10:30 to cover the last three miles.

Again the fish cooperated with a fairly steady bite along with a couple of large sunfish in the 8"-10" range. A break around 1:00 aloud a light lunch before continueing with the first of us coming off the water about 2:00 ending a fine trip.

It was a great trip Paul. Nothing like the company of a bunch of good people. Dinner was great and thanks DNR for setting up camp close to me in the woods, keeping me safe from the hogs.

We saw a pig this trip! We stayed on Pig Island so I wasn't very surprised, but when I first spotted it, I only saw the rear end and thought it was a bear. Duh! It was really cool. I am very, very happy to report that I did NOT tip this trip! YAY!

We saw some huge catfish in a little fishing hole, and thanks to my guide I was able to catch several bass, one after the other! I like my turtles, and one little guy let me get pretty close.

I thought I had posted a comment on the trip, but I don't see it so;
Jordan and I got back to the park, loaded and left at 6:00. We were back in Spring at 9:30.
Many thanks from us both for an enjoyable trip.

An enjoyable time it was.
Great to see everybody again and to meet some new people.
Thanks Paul for setting everything up. Having all the vehicles at the take out worked well.
Good fishing, good weather and good people; what more could you ask for.

It was cool seeing everybody catching fish. The flyrods were out in force, and nobody but the fish got fly hooked  .

On to the pictures - -

A couple of canoe guys talking shop -
Image

The Catfish Hole - and bass, Linda must have pulled out 7 or 8 nice bass. And I thought that Robert was going to end up noodleing that big catfish.
Image
Image

Small but colorful -
Image

A little bigger -
Image

Protective momma horse was swinging her tail and stomping her feet at me.
Image

It's a bass -
Image

Even though Paul had volunteered to cook dinner for everybody, I'd been planning to try something new every since the last trip. M.saxatilis gave me the idea from his dinner on the last trip.
Stir fried beef in hot garlic chille sauce -
Image

But Paul's red beans and rice with sausage looked pretty good too. No one went hungry.
Image

Kickin' Back -
Image

It was a beautiful night, probably the one trip of the year where it wasn't to hot or to cool. Jerry didn't mention the falling satellite he saw. No mid-night hogs to report.

The fishing Sunday morning was pretty good. I saw everybody catching.
Cool little Guad hybrid, they are a fun fight on the 5 wt. -
Image

Me and Robert get up to the "honey hole" and we're catching bass. I take a cast and a fish nails my fly. I figured it was a 16" bass or so, the 5 wt bent over pretty good. Up pops a personal best, Rio Grande cichlid.
Image
Big enough to lip.
Image
Had to be 12" or so. I was trying to get my ruler out and he went nuts, spinned me in the leg, knock over my beer, etc, etc. Went ahead and put him back in the water.
Two cast later I get another good hit. I look over and Robert has a good fight going too.
This one not quite as big as the first, but still bigger than I've ever seen.
Image

Robert had a nice Largemouth, it was a double.
Image

I had a blast guys and gals, looking forward to the next one.
See ya'll then.

The best idea may be to join one of our trips!!! :D

I would say the hog that we saw from camp ran around 200 lbs give or take 25 lbs. Fisher of Men identified one of the kingfishers we saw as a ringnecked kingfisher which he said is common in south Texas but rare up here. also saw a peregrin, numerous teal, coots, water turkey, white egrets and blue herons.

Great trip, only disappointment for me was that I couldn't camp out with y'all. It was a good, but pretty exhausting day trip, more paddling and less fishing than I would have liked. Still, managed to catch probably the biggest Rio I've ever caught, and probably the biggest Spotted Bass as well. They grow 'em a lot bigger in the Colorado than up in our Hill Country streams! Good fishing, beautiful weather, nice stretch of river, and great company. I'd call that a great day.

For all of the NON-flyfishermen/women on this trip: what types of bait worked best for you? I'm planning on using a white and/or watermelon green fluke as my go-to bait, then following up with a brush-hog and/or black/blue jig.

Thoughts?
